Stepper Motor Torque Calculation

10/01/2007 2:42 AM

Hello,

I am vijay kanse, a final year student. I need to know how to control a two-stepper motor. I want to use a bipolar stepper motor with step angle of 1.8'. steps per revolution for the motor is 200. The operating voltage should be between 5 to 15 volts. The maximum speed of motor should be 50 rpm.

I want the torque calculation for that stepper motor. The only parameter available to me is the load. i have to control the load of 500gm to1.5kg.

Please send me the equation for that or provide me approximate torque value.

Thank you.

The torque depends on the motor and the voltage/current used to drive the motor. There are a number of relatively inexpensive stepper driver boards and chips available that work in the voltage range you want for small stepper motors.

Any stepper motor manufacturer will have torque curves available for their motors.

If you tell us where you are located, you might even get motors and/or drivers for free...

hello dkwarner,

first, let me thank for your reply.

i have designed my stepper motor driver with IC L298.but problem to me is stepper motor.i am located in surat(india). i posted a questions to stepper motor manufacturer. they need a torque specification.

i have to control the load of 500gm to 1.5kg. can the simple stepper motor used in printer be utilized for my project ?

with regards and thanks,

vijay kanse.

''load of 500gm to 1.5kg''

These are not units of torque.

Knowing your max load of 1.5Kg, you are designing a mechanism to control it.

Weather a pulley, arm, cam, you will be able to calculate the required torque.

If you are using an existing motor, find the specs for a similar motor, then calculate the mechanism you need.

I don't happen to be familiar with the IC L298.

As indicated by gigaconcept, you must give us some more information.

You can move 0.5-1.5 kg of mass with virtually any stepper motor and appropriate low-friction gearing, linkages, etc., IF you don't mind taking some time to do it.

Are you trying to rotate the mass, slide it on rails, lift it, ...? How fast and how far do you need to move it. You need to do some simple high school physics math! F=ma, T=FxD, v=vi +at, etc. If you are educated enough to design your own driver, presumably you have taken physics. If not, now is the time!

Do you think that the manufacturer or distributor of the stepper motor might have that information??

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH BEFORE ASKING OTHERS TO DO IT FOR YOU.

hello prbary,

thank you for your reply.

one of the manufacturer in india had told me to give torque specification.that's why i had written for that.i am agree with your comments.thank you for giving me reply.

i have got my answer from dkwarner.

first you desided what is your requirement i.e how much torque you need. you can measure it by toruqe wriench.

then procure motor

your can use H bridge for bi polar motor drive all normal motor can run up to 200step

search for kitsur. com of k158 steper motor drive ready to use bi polar motor drive

with hi power mosfet

Are you using a screw mechanism? If so, what's the pitch?

Secondly, how fast do you want to move and what's the acceleration?

If you're using a belt and pulley, what are the diameters?
