One of the ways of finding out is to list the types in a series of replies to the original posting, then let the forum carry out a poll vote by using the "good answer" button on each reply.

It would be unreasonable to expect the outcome to be statistically significant.

There are many, each with different advantages and disadvantages, in addition some are more commonly used in some countries than others.

What did the lecturers in your diploma course recommend?

Solidworks or CATIA is pretty good. Used them in the past and they were ok. Solidworks has a little bit more user-friendly interface.
