Computer Build

12/19/2018 4:06 PM

I have been absent from CR4 for a little while because my old computer decided to die. So I decided to build a new one. I looked at prebuilt systems and couldn't find exactly what I wanted so I ordered everything off of Amazon and slapped it together and all I can say, is wow, what a monster.

Specs :

Motherboard - Asus Crosshair V Hero X470 chipset.

CPU - AMD Ryzen 2700X, 3.7/4.3GHZ, 8 core, 16 thread.

RAM - 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 PC2400 (leaves option to add another 32GB)

GPU - ASUS, Nvidia 8GB RTX 2080

HD #1 - Samsung EVO 970 1TB M.2 NVME

HD #2 - Samsung EVO 860 1TB M.2 (in raid with #1)

HD #3,#4,#5 - Western Digital Blue 4TB (12TB total)

HD #6 - Kingwin hot swappable drive bay (currently occupied by WD 1TB drive from old computer)

CD/DVD Rom - LG 16X Bluray/DVD/CD combo rewriter.

Kingwin front mount 7 in 1 card reader with 4 extra USB ports.

PS - Thermaltake Toughpower RGB 850watt.

Case - Well let's just say it looks like a Christmas tree was decorated in a nuclear reactor. (thank God the leds are easy to turn off).

Backup USB drive - WD 4TB.

Monitor - AOC 32" QHD 2560 x 1440

Speakers - Genius 5.1 80watt

Keyboard and mouse - Red Dragon 3200dpi (son talked me into this, also glows like it was in a reactor)

OS - Win10 Pro.

Other software purchased - Paragon partition manager (a little more options than windows disk manager), Norton Internet Security (latest edition, 2 years, 10 devices)

I am absolutely blown away on how fast this thing is. Boot time is in seconds with that 970 EVO at 2500GBs. CPU and GPU are so much faster than my old Phenom 2 3.4GHZ 4 core and GTX 1060 GPU.

This is my Christmas present to myself and think it will last for a few years seeing as AMD has committed to support he AM4 platform at least till 2020.

Anyone else wish to share their Christmas presents to themselves?

I still am using an old laptop running W 7. The best thing I ever did was to replace the Hard Drive with a solid state drive. It's more expensive but worth it in the improved speed.

SSD's are well worth the price, the M.2 NVME hard drives are amazing. Less than 15 seconds from pressing the on button to full boot, incuding post.

I'll see your laptop with W7 and raise you a Deceleron laptop running XP SP3.

For web browsing and the occasional Word document, I don't really need anything else. At work, however, where I do real work, I have an engineering workstation with more RAM than most hard drives (kidding, but not by much), etc, etc.

I'd like to see 32-bit Win-XP become viable again, 64-bit Win-10 is merely new & improved bugs in my opinion...and...just a reason to obsolete perfectly good hardware.

I loved XP..... No bugs so far with 64 bit 10 but it's early. Don't have it broke in yet.

Thanks. I knew this phenomenon had to have a name. I now know it.

There should be a corollary to this about making this necessary to acquire newer computers/software every two years to just stay in place. Possibly called the red queen corollary.

Re: Computer Build

Wow that sounds like a bit of overkill...I just upgraded my Acer Aspire i5 desktop ram from 8 to 16 GB a couple weeks ago, and added the cool sticker that came with it....haha

I did buy a compaq i7 7th gen laptop not too long ago that I use in the living room, and I have the old compaq i5 in the bedroom, I only use them occasionally...I just got a 55" flatscreen not too long ago for the living room where I can chromecast from the laptop if I feel the need to go big or can also bluetooth music to the Bose sound systems I have...I run win 10 on everything...

You must have spent a few grand all in....

Yes about 3 give or take. It will be a media server for the home theater and I do occasional play pc games with the step son and son. I need a rig as fast as possible to make up for my slowness...lol. Plus I need the graphics to look as good as possible or I will be easily distracted.. uhh ohh look, a squirrel!

I bought a W10 machine last month. I just can't surrender to it yet. I'm using a laptop with W 8.1 now.

My phart smone can do it all now, anyway.

Can that newfangled thing of yours even send e-mails?

I hated Win 8.1, I tried but the transition from win 7 to 10 was much easier than dealing with 8 or 8.1. Almost as bad as Vista, on par with Win ME.

That's a lot of computer for anyone!?

What type of demanding work or gaming are you planning on? Just curious.

My xmas present to myself was sliding under the back end of my new (old) 4Runner and replacing a couple of rusty steel brake lines with copper ones.

I'll replace the others in the spring.

I run a couple of laptops Windows 8.1? And 10.

Except for some slow down doing large projects using Corel draw.. I have no issues.

Nuclear xmas tree! I love it

I'll post a pic as soon as I am done with the final details, cable management, still waiting on some usb adapting cables, etc.... The case glows green, psu, cpu fan, mother board, and keyboard all glow rgb. Mouse is just an angry red. It really looks like a nuked Christmas tree. Thankfully all leds turn off easily.

As I sit watching the led fans spin with changing colors, I am strangely taken back to a cult classic "B" movie of my youth, "Motel Hell". I'm sure some of you know what I am talking about....

I find any freshly built computer works phenomenally. I suspect the predominant flaw slowing down MS operating system boots is how they handle updates. Update B27 will not be booted in the power up until every one of the Axx through B26 updates have been sequentially booted, regardless of what the final configuration will be.

I must be the biggest curmudgeon on here. I am still using my 1998 HP laptop running XP. It is starting to have screen image problems from the ribbon cable having flexed too many times. I have replaced the screen once and the hard drive once. The battery is good for at least ten minutes. A new battery is almost as much as a new laptop. Looking to get something new after christmas. Got to buy four tires for the truck first.

No, I won't mention the patent system - or lack thereof -

I went Apple several years ago and have never regretted it. My laptop runs Win XP as a virtual machine with the sole purpose of maintaining an MS Publisher file. The real present to myself is an iMac, with a fantastic screen for editing digital photographs. The iMac costs very little more than a pro monitor of equivalent quality.

I do admit to being given a Win 7 laptop and using it to run a 3D printer,

Re: Computer Build

01/03/2019 5:20 PM

I have the pics of it, but my 17 year old son decided it needed to be decorated, he slapped some Republic of Gamers stickers on it from the other build I did for his Christmas present and after I made all the LED's green, he bought radiation stickers for it with his own money. I had to put them on. I built him a gaming computer but he was more worried about making mine look cool so I could hang with him, his brother, and their friends. Heck, I was thinking mine is faster then all of theirs so I was good, guess not. LOL.

Yes, all those front usb and card reader ports work, that's 10 on the rear panel and 9 in the front. I had to add a pci express card to get them all going but you can never have too many usb ports.....
