How Many Internet Users on a Single DSL?

01/05/2006 8:27 AM

I have been asked to set up an 'internet cafe' for a group of about 50 be-splintered, myopic, cranky, saw-dust covered, Neanderthal geeks [masons and woodworkers being the original technocrats].

Question: Given an 'average' internet user (surfing, email, no so much video downloads) how many can share a DSL line (1.5M down/768kb up, wired or wireless) and still expect a reasonable internet response time? Thanks

Assuming that all you have is surfing and e-mail you can have probably 10-12 people without taking a big hit on speed. Of course that assumes that there aren't dynamic elements on the pages, or tons of graphics or that everyone is not clicking refresh every 10 seconds. Of course YMMV.

I would recommend setting up a fiber trunk, then split it out with DSL nodes. The fiber will allow for faster times with very little slow down. go to this site and get set up with a discount communications program. This site has all the bells and wistles for just the sort of cafe you are getting set. http://Ld.net/?elmdesigns Everything you need at one site.
