paint transfer pump

10/03/2007 5:37 PM

Hello all C4Rers I am looking for some help in sourcing a pump to tranfer paint (pigment). We are presently using an Ibex model 1015XA. However we are looking for one that has a faster transfer. We are in the painnt manufacturing industry and needs to recirculate and transfer paint of 50 poise or higher. need some help. thanks

State specific gravity?

AOD Air Operated Diaphragm. These are the only pump to use when pumping paint. They can be used for any paint flammable or not. Heres a link http://www.wildenpump.com/

The diaphram pump is the way to go. I move MEK, Toulene, Acetone and MIBK using these pumps and have had no problem. The only other method we do is moving the finished paint using the acutal paint pump itself. We have a 56:1 Graco and have a side valve that allows us to move the paint through the Viscon heaters ( heats the paint as it is 100% solid) through the lines to the storage drums for respraying on the field. ( on the field we have a hot water wrap that heats the 50 gallon drum and gets the product to its viscosity to pump and spray for the oil/pipelines and marine hulls)

Other than those, there is nothing I know of.

Good luck!

What kind of paint/pigment do you want to transfert: solvent based or waterborne? Are you transfering paint (grind) paste to be filtered, then viscosity adjustment to end up with a finish product in the storage tank? How many gallons per minutes are you looking for? 170GPM (644 Lpm)? 275 GPM? How far and/or how high do you have to pump your paint?

Any special requirement (teflon, Buna-N Hytrel) for the diaphragm? Any special requirement for the casing (SS, CS) or explosion proof pump?

Recirculation: are you using a high speed disperser or a sandmill? How are you cleaning the pump? Pumping solvent/water or resin? I am in the paint manufacturing business... I sure do understand your needs

The IBEX range of pumps has been discontinued, parts are still available from Alfa Laval, Eastbourne, England. If you give them the pump serial number and what flow rate etc you are trying to achieve they can advise a new speed. From experience it is most probably running at about 350rpm shaft speed, it should be possible to go up by about 50% without detriment. Either change the motorised gearbox or fit an inverter.

So far everybody is talking about using a double diaphram pump to pump paint pigment. That is ok if you are just pumping paint, but look at the viscosity. It is

50 poise, that is 5000 cP. fairly heavy for a diaphram pump. Depending on the flow and pressure you need, use either a lobe pump or a progressive cavity pump which can easily handle viscosities up to 100,000 cP. More data is required to actually spec a pump, but pumping paint pigment is no problem. Send me an email at cbrown@weiramericas.com

I totally agree with you, more information regarding the process and the paste are required before specifing any type of pump. If you a got a 2 inch pipeline and have to transfert the pigment across the manufacturing plant ( let say 500 ft), it's a different problem that just transfering resin to a sandmill to clean it up!

Diaphram pump may not be the correct pump for this type of service, electric pump could be a better choice sometimes. Viscosity is a factor to consider but it's not the most important factor when choosing a pump as there's many way to handle thick product or paste...

Need to know viscosity and the volume of the paint you wish to move in GPM.

Ibex pumps are still manufactured within Alfa Laval Eastbourne UK. If you contact them they will help you!
