Surge Ring in HT Motors

Can any body throw some light on surge rings used in HT motor winding -near the end connection.....Why it is used?.What is the material of construction?What happens if it is not used while rewinding?What is its function?

Try this book; Operation and Maintenance of Large Turbo-Generators By Geoff Klempner, Isidor Kerszenbaum

This book provides a cogent and comprehensive guide to all aspects of operating and maintaining major electrical apparatus and systems in generating stations, and in large industrial facilities. Design and material used in the production of surge rings, grounding of surge rings and other elements of generator design are discussed in detail. Hope this helps.
