DC Variable Speed Motor Controller

10/03/2007 9:02 PM

I am trying to find an economical motor controller for 12 V DC hobby motors. I need the motors to go in forward and reverse and variable speeds (very slow to full speed). I'm currently using the Bardac 200 XLV (http://www.bardac.com/pages/products/servo.html), but at $300 a piece they are little spendy, for the current project, I have spent a couple of days looking, but I cannot find anything like these controllers. I was just wondering if any of you would have any ideas.

Thank you in advance,
Jim

A variable speed feedback controller, perhaps? They can be had off the shelf for less than £25GBP.

(Other makes and suppliers are avaliable).

The favourite ones here are the ECM Compspeed type CA, the one with a reversing switch. They can be used with the smallest of low-inertia motors provided a ballast resistance of 75-150Ω is placed in parallel with the motor. The hand-built model railway locomotive achieves this typically by placing a grain-of-wheat bulb in the firebox so that, at speed, the firehole door hole glows red-yellow. The CA is not available new, though many previously-enjoyed ones can be found and are readily sought after. eBay, perhaps?

Thanks, but I was hoping to find something that would go "in-line" and I can control with a joystick. Any ideas?

You don't mention the power of the motor. What is it?

There is a single IC solution to this problem for up to 5 amps. Apex makes one.

Specifications are as follows:
Voltage -- 12 V DC
RPM -- 35
Idle Current Draw -- .2 Amps
Loaded Current Draw -- 1.1 Amps

Let me know if you need anything else.

Do you like to do something using your "ingenuity?

Use Op-amplifier with output Power transistors.

I did a few and was very happy having hands-on electronics. Your motors are exactly well suited for this project.

it is very simple circuit. you can design it yourself using ordinary transistor.if you want further ideas feel free to contact me at meignana_moorthi@yahoo.co.in.
