Backing Strip for Single Bevel Butt Joint

01/05/2019 11:00 PM

Hello,

Is backing strip necessary for single bevel butt joint preparation ( corner joint of box beam)? The thickness of plates are 7 mm each.I am also not sure if partial or full penetration weld required. Welding process is GMAW. If necessary, what kind of backing strip is recommended?

If the purpose of this weld is to demonstrate your welding abilities then no reinforcing backing plate is recommended. For anything else, knowledge of the types and magnitudes of loads this weld will experience is needed.

In short, I don't know. I don't see enough information to even hazard a guess.

It’s been a while since,... If for ASME, welding yes. You have to insure penetration.

the backer material should be same as the base material being welded.

Consult the American Welding Society literature for the proper procedures.

You are not qualified for this.

How can a corner joint be a butt joint, and why would a bevel be involved?

A closed (flush) corner joint could be considered a butt joint, though it is a bit of a stretch and would at least get some eyes rolling.

A bevel would be used to insure full penetration....which an open joint would do without the added cost/t
