How to Repair the Seal on the Shut-off Valve of a Steam Radiator with a One-pipe System

Exactly how do you clean or repair the seal on the shut-off valve of a radiator with a one-pipe steam system?

This might be a mechanical seal gate valve....in this case it can usually be cleared by opening and closing the valve, flushing it while open to remove any debris....

This is the air valve...

Dear judith:

You don't, or, your are under a lease agreement, as per your earlier response.

If you take it upon yourself to service or repair a valve on a piece of equipment that you have not been contracted to, and injury or damage occurs, you maybe held liable for any and all claims arising thereof.

Contact your leasing agent/landlord/property owner, etc before proceeding.

One would start by phoning the friendly local valve distributor to obtain a seal repair kit. One then follows the instructions supplied with it when it arrives.
