Pipe Earthing and Counterpoise Earthing

02/02/2019 9:52 PM

Dear Sirs,

In transmission line towers, how to decide, where to keep pipe earthing and where to keep counterpoise earthing?

In one transmission line tower, is it possible that in all the legs - pipe earthing or countepoise earthing is done?

Best Regards,

What does your local code state?

The codes in these unlisted places must say something like "To be installed as directed by CR4." -- JHF

That would be useless. We rarely agree on anything.

Pipe earthing, using existing underground conduits as electrodes for grounding, potential equalization, can be risky for several reasons, not the least is galvanic corrosion which can damage both your ground system and the pipe. Providing your own network of ground electrodes, counterpoise provides you with an engineered and (relatively) known quantity to protect your transmission line.

Earthing using buried water pipes falls outside the provisions in BS7671, latest edition. The reason is that plastic water pipes now prevail in the UK for domestic installation. Earthing now needs to be installed according to local codes in another way.

There is a comprehensive article on earthing in Wikipedia that explains the principles of each method.
