Scientists Develop First Fabric to Automatically Cool or Insulate Depending on Conditions

02/07/2019 9:13 PM

This is kind of interesting, a fabric that adjusts to block heat when it's cold and pass heat when it's warm. I'm wondering how it holds up to laundering.

"Researchers have engineered a new fabric from synthetic yarn with a carbon nanotube coating that is activated by temperature and humidity, releasing heat in warm humid conditions and trapping heat when conditions are cool and dry."

Don't want to hug a lady as cold and hard as that.

Sounds like the perfect curtain material to me, for all seasons and extremes.

Coincidentally I was reading about a CCS process that converts atmospheric CO2 into carbon nanotubes. That would be a score, to make your coating from the excess.

Thanks, you're the Best! The CO2-nanotube technology is described at the end of that article.

Rixter, can you tell me how this fabric holds up to :

A. Recycling, B. Burning, C. Wearing/fluffing/lint, D. Decomposition.

Is there any allergens ?

If it does work, this could replace your standard cotton tee shirt.

I remember a fabric that was hot when there was less of it.

I think her name was Seven of Nine.

This will certainly benefit me on the long Goldwing Rides. I gear up anyway but the thermal suits now are a bit bulky and stiff for riding.

Let's ride! ..

...here's a tip I've passed along to many people battling cold windy weather during outdoor commutes.

Stop at a free newspaper box and take one out.

Open your jacket and place it (the newspaper)over your chest/belly.

Zip up. done.

It's amazing how much heat you will conserve by blocking that wave of wind coming towards you. The pocket of air behind the newspaper will get very warm in the worst conditions. I used this method after sundown on my shadow for years, but I'm sure it works with a Goldwing as well.

...low cost and low tech, so it might not be for everybody.

Sounds like a great material with which to cover soffit vent grids to keep my attic cool and dry.

Re: Scientists Develop First Fabric to Automatically Cool or Insulate Depending on Conditions... Plant Blanket

Apply this to plant leaves without excessively diminishing photosynthesis and leaf stoma operation and you have an agricultural technology which can greatly extend the climate zones in which certain crops are viable. Mars terraform enthusiasts take note. I would like to see how well this early version works asis on Earth for covering plants overnight in winter for freeze protection. It should be better for those who habitually forget to uncover in the morning and typically end up with overheated vegetation.
