Earthing of Portakabin

02/20/2019 12:11 AM

Dear Sirs,

We have a poortakabin that is of metal body. Is there a chance of electrocution or electrical leakage?

We have arranged all tables, chairs but just in case a naked wire touches the outside metal body - is there chance of electrocution?

Best Regards,

"Continuous earth wires shall be provided through out the circuit and external earth terminal shall also be provided"

Portacabins and similar metal clad buildings or structures are often wired with mains potential electrical fittings and fixtures (lights, power points, etc) and as such should be earthed to ensure the safety of the public (almost always, there may be special exceptions).

Just follow local building codes and standards.

Due to possible liability issues,I will not instruct you or advise you,I will simply point you to more information.

It is illegal in USA for an unlicensed person to perform, supervise,or direct such work because of the potential deadly hazards of improper installation.

This link shows everything related to grounding and bonding of metal buildings, and also the bonding and grounding of remote power sources(generators, etc.)

This link applies to the National Electrical Code used by most of the states in the USA.

If you are not a qualified electrician,or a bona fide employee of a licensed company do not perform this work.

As a former Marine electrician, I can say that where there is metal, water, wiring, and electricity, there is ALWAYS a possibility of electrocution.

Hire a COMPETENT electrical engineer and a COMPETENT architect. Competency is rated by the engineering society.

Handling electricity is not for amateurs or the faint of heart!

The external earth connection will conduct the electricity (if a live wire touches the metal building body) to the nearby earth. Without the external earth, you would be exposed to electrical shock when you step from the building, i.e. one foot (or other body part) touching the building and one foot on earth.

Similar to stepping out of your rubber tired car while a live wire is touching the car, the exposure is when you step out.

The circuit protection for the wire should interrupt the current if the protection detects a fault to ground.

The chance is very much reduced if the power supply to the unit has been installed and is maintained in accordance with local electrical codes. Have a qualified local Electrician review the installation and recommend improvements.
