If it was undetected, how did they know it occurred?

I'm thinking "undetected" until it hit the atmosphere. They do have some they are tracking near the earth's orbit, but this wasn't one of them.

The linked article indicated that the explosion went undetected. It wasn't until someone was reviewing images that they saw the path of the meteorite.

I guess the ambiguity is:

1. An undetected asteroid exploded.

2. An undetected explosion of an asteroid.

Inspired by the late, great George Carlin.

Is there a point here?

None that I can see.

Explain!

I'm betting Sarah Palin saw it from her house, since it was high in the sky.

Disclosure: (She said that "you can actually see Russia from Alaska", not her house.)

About the only place that works is looking from Little Diomede Island to Big Diomede.

The current crop of politicians has never let the truth get in the way of their own self aggrandizement.

Back in the time Alaska was Russia.

Whatever leftovers there is, can maybe still be seen.

I heard about it at the time it happened (3 months ago). The commentary now has degraded into nothingness and lower.

From the linked article:

"The fact that we missed this rock is a testament to our rather incomplete picture of space around Earth, as well as the difficulty of tracking rather small space rocks in the first place."

It was just dumb luck it exploded over an uninhabited area. Yes there is more uninhabited than inhabited area on the planet, but still just luck.

Did it really go undetected? Or was it, and they, "The Governments" decided not to alert anyone for fear of mass panic? Knowing that there was absolutely nothing they could do to stop it. This one was large enough that had it made it through the atmosphere we might not be here having this discussion.

After all, after decades of spending billions upon billions on preventing just his type of thing from happening with all the latest weapon defense systems and orbit posted equipment, (Satellites, Space labs, Telescopes ) to look for these things and further out into space, either they saw it and knew it was comming, or all that money has been wasted for years.

<...173kT..> is a really bad day for anything on the ground.

As far as the satellite pictures are concerned, that translates as a little puff of smoke in the image.

Respect.
