Distance Sensor - Ultrasonic

10/10/2007 8:32 PM

I am looking to include a distance measurement function into a medical device I am currently developing - the requirement is to measure the distance of an object from the LCD screen. I have limited space available in the housing and am looking for any pointers on where to look for a small (say 6mm diameter ideal - 10mm diameter ok) ultrasonic or optical sensor that will enable me to do this.

I am developing the enclosure design and am not an electronics engineer so am just looking to recommend something that the electronics guys can work with..

any suggestions would be great.

Thanks. J.

Basically you are talking about "Ryobi" Stud-Sensor which features a LCD and is hald-held portable operates with a 9V Battery.

The function of measuring is :

The machine utilizes a laser beam to measure distances and heights.

It is an extremely fast way of measuring a room for example, or measuring the distance to a solid object from any point.

It has a range of 0.6 meters up to 15 meters.

In addition, the unit can also add measurements together, or multiple measurements to provide square and cubic area measure results. You can switch between units of measurement (feet or meters) so its good for whatever form of scale you are accustomed to. You press the "+" and "x" buttons simultaneously to switch between measurement

I know that at the Texas Instruments website under their MSP430Fxxxx series of microcontrollers they have an app note for the complete design of an ultrasonic transducer circuit for the purpose of measuring distances (such as the Ryobi type device for which the laser is really only a pointer). In their schematic there should be a part number and name for the ultrasound device incorporated. With that info you can google other similar devices and find a form factor that is suitable.

Nice work. I wish they study first.
