Can a Maser Work Underwater?

05/27/2019 3:12 PM

I have seen some research on Laser communication underwater, these are severely limited by the light diffraction....but what about Masers, is there a frequency that could cut through the water? How would it work? What frequency would most likely be immune to the properties of water? There are Masers that are capable of extremely low frequencies, and I have heard of low frequency communication underwater for long distances...What are your thoughts on this?

Ask the USN, they'd know, but I seriously doubt they'd divulge anything.

If the USN will not reply, ask the Russians!

Water is much more transparent in the visible region than in microwave wavelengths.

It seems that acoustic communication is the way to go....and has gone

..."But water's density makes it ideal for a different type of wireless transmission: acoustic. The denser a material is, the better it is at transmitting sound. (Picture the classic tin can phone using a piece of taut string to transmit sound.) Not only does sound travel further in a denser medium but it also travels at a greater speed (for example, the speed of sound in the air is 343 m/s while the speed of sound in water is 1,500 m/).

Communication via sound is so practical underwater that the blue whale, the largest and loudest mammal, can communicate over thousands of miles with other whales just by making low-frequency rumbles. Sound is currently used in many applications underwater with one of the biggest uses being SONAR (Sound Navigation And Ranging), where a sound pulse is emitted from a source and the reflected pulse from objects underwater are received. Using multiple receivers, the size and distance of objects can be determined, which can greatly help with generating an image of the environment when there is little to no light.

But ranging and navigation is not the only use for sound. Data transmission is also possible in a near identical matter to normal wireless communication involving error correction and parity bits."...

One of the first JANUS acoustic modems was built around Linux code running on a BeagleBone Black. Image: NATO.

Sound is much better for underwater communication as long as you don't need a lot of bandwidth. The attenuation increases with frequency. (Whales have very deep voices!)

"Whales have very deep voices!"

Yeah, and probably not much to say...Marco.....Polo........Marco......Polo...

There actually has been a lot of study of these whale sounds.

Some of the whale songs last 30 minutes and are sung over and over for hours or days. These songs have been extensively studied, but we can only guess at what they mean.

"Spectrogram of humpback whale vocalizations. Detail is shown for the first 24 seconds of the 37 second recording humpback whale song. The ethereal whale songs and echolocation clicks are visible as horizontal striations and vertical sweeps respectively."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_vocalization

To be fair, a spectrogram of human speech would be just as cryptic. The only way to understand human speech is to grow up in a human culture, and I suspect that the only way to understand "whale speech" would be to grow up in a "whale culture".

Cetaceans have a relative brain size comparable to humans. We have an "alien intelligence" to practice on, to develop a means of communication, in case we ever meet extraterrestrials.

Well if I was to hazard a guess it would probably be they are talking about food....I'm hungry ...I'm full...So one would be a happy song, upbeat....and one would be a sad song, downbeat...Maybe a traveling song, on the road again...Lost a mate, my baby done left me.......as well as a personal theme song for identification....I'm a Rocket Man......Possibly an alarm song, which would probably be a high pitched scream... Possibly a mating call, Low pitched rhythmic song to brag about size....

These vocalizations may prove to be simply stomachs growling.I have heard my own make such sounds.Never really tried to analyze them though.Perhaps they could play them back underwater and see if the whales respond.

Yes a microphone on the stomach can yield some surprising results...

It's rather interesting if you hold an acoustic guitar against your stomach. The sound box couples the sound out into the air.
