SSE2 set of instructions

10/13/2007 9:57 AM

Hi: I am a mechanical engineer and I need some help with a change I must do in my PC. I attempted to install a soft (for Finite Element Analysis) and the installation failed immediately with a message "your processor is not adequate". I went to the official site and there informed that is necessary a processor with SSE2 set of instructions. Then I went to Wikipedia where I read that my AMD Sempron 2600+ does not have this set. The motherboard is a PC Chip M825G V9 2.a and the SO is W XP sp2.

My question is: is it possible to change the micro processor? An AMD Athlon will solve my problem? Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Gabriel,

I found the list of CPUs supported by the PC Chips M825G V9 2.a motherboard by doing a quick Google search.

Here is a link to the list:

Hi Mike: after my post I continuous with my search, also in the page you suggested, and I discovered that the stuff that led this matter is the processor socket, which in my case is "A", in AMD naming. For this socket there is only one Sempron available (more powerful than mine): the 3000+, that only support SSE set of instructions.

So, I am thinking in a PC change. Oh this modern world, always we have to change our electronics devices!

Thanks.

Holla Gabriel,

What FE package are you using? I am curious because I may be wanting to purchase in the near future.

I hope everything goes well with your upgrade.

Miguel (AKA Mike).

I am also evaluating. I teach how to use FE software in my college. There we use Abaqus, in a free package, limited to 1000 nodes, but with almost all features operative. I was using 6.6 version and intended to upgrade to 6.7.

Do you know if there is some Ansys package for free?

Regards,

Gabriel

A few month back, I downloaded a free FE package, but, unfortunately, all reference to it is on my computer back in the city. Good documentation, designed for a course at a university that slips my mind. I am out in the jungle for a few days, so do not have access to the information, but if you send me an e-mail, I will forward a link to you when I get back to town...

Hi Gabriel,

Only a very little. I kick myself in the butt from time to time for not taking it in high school or college!

I just wanted you to feel welcome at CR4!

Miguel

Hi: thanks for your wishes. I joined CR4 a year ago and my contributions (very few) are generally in my field: mechanical. It is really a very interesting forum.
