Perfect Lawns Are Bad for the Environment

06/19/2019 12:53 PM

A few years back I wrote a series of three CR4 blog posts about the costs of perfect turfgrass, in which I made my anti-perfect-lawn stance abundantly clear. This article from the University of Florida reiterates the benefits of weedy lawns for pollinators. You can still have a lawn that's mostly turfgrass, in places where a lawn is a sensible groundcover. Just leave some clover and bare spots for the bugs.

This is a great attitude for the people that don't care about property value, don't live in an area with a HOA, and don't care if their property looks like an abandoned field....My yard is a pollinator's paradise...

I don't actually have a lawn - grass is one of my biggest weeds, ironically.

It's early spring here (leaves not fully out on the trees) due to the cold weather, and the queen bumblebees are out on the hustle to feed their first brood of workers. I have tons of bee forage in my perennial herb garden but the flowering doesn't really start in earnest until mid July. So I'm trying to find and make more of the really early flowers which they need. Flowering native shrubs are the best, but moose and hares are savage and inconsiderate of what I'd like to grow. I didn't have a lot of dandelions but I've let them multiply for a few years, so there are quite a few now. But identifying some other flowers that bloom about this time is high on my garden priority list.

It's very heartening to see how many people are leaving their lawns abloom with dandelions, out of concern for bees.

Well, I'm glad to be doing my part!

I fought the lawn, and the lawn won...

You did it wrong.

Usually you park a trailer alternativly your third car on the lawn, cover it with a tarp, no do not use one that fits perfectly, but one that flatters in the wind and uses more space than necessary to cover the vehicle.

Make sure it looks interesting what's under the tarp, so you get a lot of foot traffic around.

Cutting over the lawn, walking, driving, helps winning at the edges.

Where watering is required make sure the reticulation is cut off, where sun is required to burn the lawn, cut the tree down. Make sure the soil is poor and otherwise waterlogged. Don't forget not to fertislise!

Ask me because I try to grow a lawn and by all means, I cant get it to grow for the above reasons!

So next I will be bulldozing the lot and pave it!

Sure is a great excuse for non gardeners. Afraid I like and enjoy a near perfect lawn. The bugs have flower beds to enjoy at their leisure, when I have a garden that is.
