I'm surprised Pittsburgh didn't have a winner ... anybody else out there familiar with the Negley Avenue ski slope?

Supposedly the steepest street in Pittsburgh, PA. is Canton Avenue. As the link shows, this is very close to the grade found in Wales. Canton Avenue is paved and has been for a long time.

Maybe they paved all of that path in Wales recently and thus made it qualify for this odd Guinness title. That would explain NZ's criticism and the variety of muddy trail pictures I saw for the Welsh road.

How did I not know about Canton Avenue? I followed a link from your link and found this list of steep Pgh streets and their steepness, measured as a percentage of rise over run. Beechview wins the prize for most steep streets in the city, at least by this measure. South Negley is trivial by comparison (15.81% versus 37% for Canton ) but it still scared my mother half to death when we drove down it. Good thing she didn't visit in the winter!

The Kiwi's have nothing to complain about. They had a false claim of a 35% slope being the steepest street. Canton Avenue with its cobblestones at the top for added traction, beat them with a 37% slope.

I suspect China has many steep places, too. The 999 steps to heaven stairs were driven recently, too. That is if you believe the commercial.

As a former 'burgher I would have voted for Cuthbert Street on Mt. Washington. But then I came across Bedwelty Hill in Aber-bargoed Wales.

Without wanting to show a natural bias, the Welsh street was not measured on the centreline of the road, which would be a reasonable expectation. Measuring it on the inside of a corner is a bit ridiculous.

Having done a U-turn at the top of Baldwin street, its pretty scary.

Having been robbed by the poor rulings twice in a week is a bit much.

Night view of Lombard St. in San Francisco. Not the world's steepest, but maybe the crookedest.

Too bad it's not in the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, which is the record longest place name.

I lived in Wales for a while. Welsh is a difficult language and the best I could do is pronounce a few place names, not including this one.

Not so, it used to be New Zealand (Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuaakitanarahu) but now is Thailand (Krungthepmahanakornamornratanakosinmahintarayutthayamahadilokphopnopparatrajathaniburiromudomrajaniwesmahasatharnamornphimarnavatarnsathitsakkattiyavisanukamprasit).

Yes but that's only how one spells them phonetically, in English.
