Quantities, temperatures and pressures would be a good start!

Please help the forum provide assistance by listing those things that have been tried and found not to work?

Please explain the term <...NP9...>?

Nonylphenol Ethoxylate. That's NP9

The Original Poster would have saved time by stating that to the forum in the original post.

If you don't know how to do it, you probably should not try it.

Yes you can.

By mixing carefully. Sulphonic acid will react with most terpenes, as I can tell from experience (a straight mixture with d'Limonene will melt a PVC bottle and emit plenty of smoke that smells worse than putting your nose over the exhaust of a poorly running diesel).

By the way, what are you using to neutralize the sulphonic acid? And what viscosity range of gel is desired? The nonylphenol has its own gel range, and you haven't detailed if this mixture is to be water or solvent based (it could be either!). Provide more info and you'll get more advice.

It is water based, neutralizing it with sodium hydroxide

Okay.

The simple fact is that you are trying to create a microemulsion if you want it to be clear. The branched DDBSA, especially neutralized with isopropylamine (Rhodacal IPAM was a product I used to use) are far better for this than sodium LABSA, but the cost is much higher. The other point is that in my experience the break point from a normal emulsion to a microemulsion is typically accompanied by a reduction in viscosity, which is not what you want.

My recommended mixing procedure, based on typical double distilled pine oil (try small quantities first!) and assuming you don't want to use any other ingredients:

  1. Premix the pine oil and NP9. This will thin out the NP9 and dilute the pine oil to reduce runaway polymerization.
  2. Add the sulphonic acid, mixing well. DO NOT HEAT!
  3. Add to the water with agitation.
  4. Add NaOH as desired to neutralize.

You will have to experiment with the proportions of each to achieve the desired result, and have a fairly high percentage of NP9 to gel the product (note that different manufacturers often have different gel curves due to ethoxylation variations, which can be obtained from their literature). It may be more economical and efficient to use a carbomer, polyacrylate or gum to thicken instead.
