Average Number of Negative Ions Produced by a Negative Air Purifier?

08/17/2019 8:42 AM

I am doing a project of Negative ions so i would like to get an idea about how many Ions will be produced by a negative ion air purifier at a particular time.

I would also like to know how to increase the number of ions produced at a time.

The exact number of ions is not easily calculated without expensive specialized equipment.

The actual number does not matter and is generally used in advertising.

The smaller the emitter diameter, the more ions will be produced per length of emitter.

Steel wool is good, but creates a lot of air flow resistance,if you are planning on forcing air thorough it.Unrolling and stretching it into a thin layer will give better results.

Increasing voltage will also generate more ions, but be aware that above 6,000 volts, ozone is produced.

A little ozone is good,it kills germs and gives the air the "just after a thunderstorm" freshness, but too much is bad and can harm your lungs and deteriorate plastics and rubber.

...."the average air ionizer emits 10 million anions per second. However, some ionizers boast an emission rate of twice that number."...

You need a negative ion counter to measure output...

A simple Google search produced this result. The first one rated at 10,000, the second one double that. I would think your question is similar to asking how many horse power an engine produces...an answer cannot be provided without more information. A unit made to plug into an accessory outlet in a car will produce far fewer than one made for home use, or for an industrial application.

That would depend upon the separation energy needed to produce the required <...ions...> and the power consumed by the equipment. As those details have been withheld from the forum, that's about as far as it can go.

Would a simple phone call to the equipment manufacturer answer the questions, perhaps?

Further, it is not possible to purify anything by adding something else to it. Purification is about taking the something else out of the thing that wants purifying.

Try using some of this:

Actually, an alternating ion field will remove dust from the air, and neutralize static charges on equipment.

The oppositely charged dust particles collide and accumulate weight till they fall out.

I have made some using a neon sign transformer and .004" diameter wire strung up across a plexiglass frame and wrapped around plastic rivets in a zig-zag pattern.

This was mounted inside the discharge air duct.

These were used in large industrial applications.

The dust, however, will tend to accumulate on walls.

An ion detector can be made from a smoke alarm ion sensor, and if you want to get more sophisticated, separate grids can be used for each polarity and controlled remotely by using feedback from the sensors to establish a desired ion level in a room.

Some processes perform better when slightly positive, while others do better when slight negative.

I am sure technology has improved over the years, it has been over 30 years since I built one.

Here is a link to some interesting electronic projects of all types, including ion generators:

I used to build negative ion generators for friends as an air freshener for the bath room.

My voltage was 5.5kv

I used seven parallel tips (penny nails made very sharp) lined up on seven pieces of copper tubing and a ground plain mounted on the wall a foot away. It created enough breeze to blow out a match. I built them with variable timers for run time. You did need to clean the ground sheet and the tubes regularly. My schematic was similar to the one already posted. The whole thing was in an open box to protect fingers from 5.5kv

Edit: Wow just noticed this comment is years old.
