Clean Way to Connect a 12 Wire Motor

08/29/2019 12:55 AM

Does anyone know of a handy terminal block or something of that nature that can be used to terminate a 480 V 12 wire motor? We have a 150 HP motor with an enclosure that is not very roomy and we have been using polaris style terminals to make the connections to a VFD. The motors in the past were 6 wire and we used a single feed from the VFD. But this one they ran a parallel run of #2 to the motor so we have 4 motor lead wires and 2 T leads. They found 6 hole polaris lugs but they go from #10 to 250 and are huge (~10"long). We could use compression lugs and bolt n nut together but that is still going to be a massive glob. Engineering wants us to use a 3M splice kit but it is only good for two wires so that will not work.

Have you asked the motor maker how, with parallel windings, they get 4 plant wires terminated onto the motor?

They designed it like that - hopefully they considered the user's problems when windings are paralleled.

Is this a case of motor maker changing the design without advising your company or your purchaser changing the supplier because it appears to be cheaper?

Either way, time & cost have been dropped onto the assemble/install area & you should kick back by demanding a solution from purchase!

Quite. The best source of advice is the original equipment manufacturer. The quickest source of advice may be had by the Original Poster picking up the telephone and asking some questions of that organisation, a skill that seems much in decline according to recent postings on CR4.

I agree. And when the OP picked up the phone and asked those in the organization some questions the reply was to use the following:

3M Motor Lead Splicing Kits
5300 Series
For 1000 Volts or Less Cables or 5/8 kV Shielded
and Non-Shielded Cables

which is great for a two wire splice. The problem was this showed up on our doorstep two weeks before it was to be running and we were told "make it work". And it does. You just can't always depend on what is at the other end of the phone.

In UK/europe motors usually come with a terminal box like below incorporated - note the strap for Y connection.

Interesting to see other folk's problems, I guess you need wirecutters & heatgun to change a motor.

It would be rare for someone to parallel #2AWG to a motor, when you need more current than a single 500MCM or maybe 350MCM, then you might see parallel feeds. Regardless, motor manufacturers have a long history back to the late ‘60s of not taking into account wiring termination space requirements. Default specs for paper mills always required ‘oversize’ conduit box, and even those were marginal.

Before Polaris connectors existed your choices were crimp and bolt, or Kearny split bolts, then covered with a layer of varnished cambric tape, followed by rubber tape, covered with PVC electrical tape. Big bulge? Yes, but it worked for everyone for the first 100+ years of connecting AC motors.

The real problem stemmed from someone deciding to use parallel #2s without consideration of what that would mean in the motor peckerhead. Another alternative for you is to add a local junction box or, if appropriate, a local non-fused disconnect, terminate your #2s there and then run larger single conductors to the motor.

Option 3 is to contact your motor supplier to see if they offer a larger peckerhead for that motor.

Maybe you can improve your connector selection by not paralleling the #2 feeds, connect each feed wire to one of the motor windings, i.e. 6 connectors instead of 3, might be able to get them in smaller range size. Stacking crimp type lugs may also save some space, plus improve reliability.
