What Was It?

08/29/2019 1:09 AM

On a recent hiking trip along a river we discovered this artifact that had been abandoned. Any one have an idea what is was used for. The bottom of the tank is fiberglass and the plywood top appears to be made from marine grade plywood with some faint remnants of green paint in the wood. The wheels are some sort of plastic and appeared to have been chewed by the critters. there was only one hole in the top and none in the bottom other than some created from abuse or deteriation

Looks like it could be the steering assembly from a boat....

Perhaps it was used to help get a large flat bottomed boat,or supplies on shore. The hole in the top looks like where a wheel was lost. The bottom fiberglass would resist water rot,and support a certain amount of weight if partially submerged.

Alternatively, perhaps the top is really the bottom, and was used to transport cargo from water to land.

Or it may not have been originally designed for water use.

Considering flooding, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc, there is no telling where it originated.

My first inclination is that you fill the fiberglass tank with some liquid through the fill hole and then the wheels act as applicators bringing said fluid up as something rolls on them. I imagine you could use this thing to wet a lot of stamps, but something tells me that isn't its purpose.

How about a support for a ramp to a dock. The ramp would roll along the wheels as the tide raised and lowered. The ramp would have to be very light weight if plastic wheels were used.

My issue with the ramp idea or that it was used for moving something is why use large specialized plastic wheels and why use a tank. Instead why not just mount some casters to a board and call it a day.

The wheels look like they would reach to the bottom of the tank and yet likely don't have much physical strength.

I think the wheels and who made or makes them and what they are for is the key to figuring out what this thing was.

I could see this thing painting strips or glue on something but I would expect paint or glue remnants to be stuck to the rollers and in the tank.

To me is looks like a supplement feeder for cattle. The tank would be filled with molasses based feed supplements and the cattle lick it off the wheels.

Here is an example

Good idea. The dimensions suggested by the shoe, bottom right of last picture, make sheep or pigs more likely.

The lick tank use fits and the wheels for these things look like they are the same.

Yes, that was a lick feeder for cattle. It was filled with a liquid mineral supplement. Hauling the liquid out to the pasture was always a pain. We went to the dry material a long time ago as they were a lot easier to handle.

This was the first failed prototype of an automatic redneck butt wiper.

This was a four seat model.

Subsequent models had a squeegee at the bottom, and a Montgomery Ward magazine catalog page dispenser, with an optional non-glazed page available.

Western models were fitted with detachable scoops attached to the wheels to assist those with trail ride compaction.(Everyone carried their own personal Pooper Scooper for sanitary reasons).

The hole was for a handle for hanging on during the wiping process when the weather was cold.
