08/31/2019 10:25 PM

i not a tech but i love doing diy electronics project. im planning to make a diy pc steering wheel using my old xbox 360 controller. but i dont know what 10k potmeter should i use. and i dont know the deference of potmeter specially the precision potentiometer and the normal 10k pot... i need more info so i can choose the right pot to start this project. i need potentiometer whith smooth response and no input lag.... thank you for answering my question... im from Philippines... ☺️

How much do you want to spend? What voltage and wattage rating?

i dont know thw wattage ang voltage... its a xbox 360 controller. i saw some videos in youtube on diy steering wheel using console controller. they just use 10k pot. but im searching for 10k pot online and i saw the precision pot 10 turns... im wondering if is it better to use the 10k precision potentiometer rather than the regular 10k potentiometer.... in youtube diy they use ordinary linear pot to replace the analog joy stick of the controller

You don't want the precision potentiometer because you would have to rotate the steering wheel for example 10 full turns rather than (just under) 1 for a standard linear potentiometer!

Refer to the DIY videos for advice on recommended potentiometer replacement as there are tons of different physical packages these come in and you want something that is going to be physically similar to your existing one so it fits easily.

My guess is that you don't have any realistic power issues for a xbox 360 controller. That probably leaves you with 2 major issues:

  1. Taper
  2. Mechanical

My guess is that you will want a "LINEAR" taper. This means that when you turn the potentiometer through one degree of rotation you get a specific resistance change, turn it the same amount again and you again get the same amount of resistance change. The "taper" topic might not mean much now but there are "audio" taper potentiometers where the amount of resistance change does not match the amount of shaft rotation.

Mechanical is probably where you need to focus, at least for your first attempt. You need to somehow mount the potentiometer and you need to somehow make the desired "full scale" turn of the steering wheel cause the desired (possibly full scale) rotation of the potentiometer. My suggestion is to have your first attempt be to just screw a knob on the potentiometer and try to make it work. After you have it electrically doing what you want you then are free of electrical issues and only need to think about mechanical issues. You will probably have "direct connection" at the top of your list but you could also consider gears, pulley and string, rubber wheels in contact with each other or some other type of mechanical coupling.

You should start looking at "chassis mount" or "panel mount" types of potentiometers. These have a threaded shaft and are made to be mounted to sheet metal that has a hole drilled or punched in it. This will probably be easier to mechanically deal with than a potentiometer made to mount to a printed circuit board.

A steering wheel sounds like something that will get slammed from all the way counterclockwise to all the way clockwise during game play. Being strong enough mechanically to handle this stress might be one of your bigger challenges.

i already have all the gear components i need just the except the pot that can handle the exact rotation input with out input lag.... im looking fir 10k linear pot but there are so many of it and i dont know whats the best pot should i choose... some says precision pot will do. other says wire wound, multi turn and 10 turn or its better to use pot from psu than pot from audio device....

If it were me I would go for a 10K linear pot of the wire wound type. The other forms that have the resistance element deposited on the phenolic resin substrate are not designed for continuous rotary motion and will soon wear out the resistance element as they are designed for use where a position is selected and the pot sits at that position for some time, like a volume control.

<...dont know what 10k potmeter should...use...>

That's OK, because no-one here knows either; it can't be seen from here.

This site has some very nice potentiometers for sale.
