Stampede at Holy Site Kills 31

09/11/2019 2:44 PM

On or near the anniversary of 9/11 this happened:

national-security/2019/09/11/watch-stampede-at-shiite-holy-ritual-kills-31-in-iraq-as-hundreds-of-thousands-self-mutilate/

Do you think these people are behaving logically?

Behaving logically is a relative term. It all depends on where you stand when viewing it.

You must see logic where I don't. Where do you stand? I wish they would self-mutilate in a lower spot and to a greater degree.

By my upbringing, the culture in which I live, the values that I hold, no it is not logical to me. But I don't live in their shoes. This must be something that they value to go to these lengths.

This is a good example of how people cling to the past to bring meaning to their lives, it's an escape into an alternate reality, much like taking recreational drugs...It's a safety relief valve that keeps us from going mad from the day to day struggle to maintain the facade that represents current societal demands, a tiresome and boring requirement...so sometimes we all go a little mad...why else would anybody jump out of a perfectly good airplane, or run in front of great powerful bulls, or try to break a land speed record, or any number of other practices that risk our lives...

I wasn't referring to the stampede, but the self-mutilation:

"Many of the faithful beat their chests and lashed themselves with chains in a symbolic expression of grief and regret for not being able to help Hussein before his martyrdom."

This was referring to "Imam Hussein, Prophet Mohammad’s grandson. He was killed in the year 680", so none of these people were alive then. But you may be right.

Some Christians believe in Mortification of the flesh through

Self-flagellation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigationJump to search For a metaphorical meaning, see Self-deprecation. Further information: Flagellation § As a religious practice

Self-flagellation is the act of hitting oneself with a whip as part of a religious ritual.

Christianity[edit]

Main article: Mortification of the flesh Magdarame (penitents) during Holy Week in the Philippines

The Flagellation refers in a Christian context to the Flagellation of Christ, an episode in the Passion of Christ prior to Jesus' crucifixion. The practice of mortification of the flesh for religious purposes was utilized by some Christians throughout most of Christian history, especially in Catholic monasteries and convents. In addition, Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformer, regularly practiced self-flagellation as a means of mortification of the flesh.[1] Likewise, the Congregationalist writer Sarah Osborn also practiced self-flagellation in order "to remind her of her continued sin, depravity, and vileness in the eyes of God".[2] It became "quite common" for members of the Tractarian movement within the Anglican Communion to practice self-flagellation using a discipline.[3]

In the 13th century, a group of Roman Catholics, known as the Flagellants, took this practice to its extreme ends. The Flagellants were later condemned by the Roman Catholic Church as a cult in the 14th century because the established church had no other control over the practice than excommunication.

I didn't know that. I couldn't care less what Roman Catholics do. These people aren't Christians though.

Many of the people of Iraq are enemies of Christians (and Jews too). But maybe not the ones in the festival of the OP. Someone may be able to clear that up. But Iraq is the country we bombed after the WTC was destroyed on 9/11 2001. The following link has some info, but not that much:

You should be questioning why we bombed Iraq for that.

OK, here's something about Christians. See if you can defend this:

If Sam Brownback told me that 2 + 2 = 4, I wouldn't believe it. Instead I would count a few objects for myself.

Moreover, this article is not relevant, anyway. There is no particular parallelism or connection between it and the original Breitbart article.

You said, "I wasn't referring to the stampede, but the self-mutilation"

However, since your thread is titled: "Stampede at Holy Site Kills 31", and since 31 died from trampling, maybe you should have chosen a different title.

Anyway, Breitbart is not a news organization. It is right wing psycho-babble propaganda outlet.

You are entitled to your left-wing psycho-babble opinion. If there is anything wrong or left out of the article, please inform us (and give references). In fact, I doubt you could find the article anywhere else. I have found Breitbart News to have more world news than any other I have tried. I like the choice of categories at the top so I can get the particular news I am looking for quickly. You as an Arizonian should appreciate the Texas company for their part in protecting your southern border, but I'm sure you don't. Another reason I read it is because you don't want me too. So go ahead and believe the fake news you find nearly everywhere else.

You seem to exhibit the same fanaticism to Breitbart that you ridicule those of other cultures for exhibiting.

The fact that I might not be able to find the article on credible news sources simply proves my point.

The article also appeared in the NY Times, you can't get any more left wing than that...You seem to be confusing news articles with editorial opinion pieces...

Thanks.

I see that you are ever vigilant and responding to almost every thread that appears here. You may have missed a few, but I doubt it.

I don't go to NY Times or MSNBC either. I prefer to go to unbiased, neutral (actual) news sites.

Look on the bright side. Tomorrow there will be many more things on which you can give us the benefits of your Google talents.

Sweet dreams.

Prey-tell, what are these magical unbiased sites?...or are they kept secret?

Using your considerable search skills, take a look at the last couple of years, after you started monopolizing the forum and responding to 90% (if not more) of posts, even if you know nothing about the subject at hand. Your finger prints are all over almost every thread. You ruined it for many members. I gave up even trying to respond because your were already there with your Googled answer.

That's OK, have your fun.

As to my news sources, they are NOT Faux nor Breitbart.

This thread stinks.

I think it's a stretch to say that a post from me precludes anybody else from answering, unless of course they have nothing else to add...

Why do you refuse to share your unbiased news sources with others?

Check your shoes, you might have stepped in something....
