Increased Steam Turbine Vibrations After Opening Steam Extraction

09/29/2019 6:41 AM

We have been facing an issue of increased vibrations on one of our 15MW steam turbine (extraction+condensing) after the steam extraction is opened. Without steam extraction in operation the turbine operates well within the allowable vibration limits upto 75% of its electrical load.

Any leads to what can the possible reasons be?

<...Any leads...?>

Yep. Here's another one. Get on the phone with the original equipment manufacturer [OEM] and discuss the problem, as no other party knows as much about the equipment and how to use it. The OEM will have dealt with the problem many times before, and the <...We...> hasn't.

It's supposed to be a vote for "Off topic", not "...don't like it".

Possibly because you constantly repeat yourself.

It is likely not a problem with the turbine itself, so the OEM will not be much more help than anyone else. The list that Solar Eagle provided is a good starting point, but you have provided the information for one important investigation.

Since the problem goes away with no extraction flow, perhaps the extraction piping pipe supports are locked up, so when you heat up the piping, it starts lifting the turbine off of its supports or foundation.

There is some miminum exhaust flow required, we're assuming that when you are extracting, you are maintaining the minimum design exhaust flow, I think it is like 15% of admission flow.

I would suspect bearing instability at the condensing end bearing. With full extraction there is very little load on this end of the shaft to suppress imbalance or bearing instability.

If you have vibration data (non contact probe data) let us know and we could possibly be of more assistance
