Looking for Secure Remote Control for Gate/Garage Door

10/23/2019 2:49 AM

Hopefully there is somebody reading this with experience in this kind of hardware.

I need it to have changeable access codes, using a short range remote control, and NOT be connected to the Internet (or it must be possible to disable that feature and leave it disabled).

So, no operating systems requiring updating.

I am willing to do some assembly, including soldering (I would rather not have to load programs into a ROM, though).

I've been wading through brochures, descriptions, etc. and am only getting more confused.

How do you have changeable access code on a short range remote control?

It has a button. Not a keypad.

My point exactly. The off-the-shelf hardware I have seen won't do.

Many of the simple "button" remotes will have a 4 toggle binary switch inside that needs to match the receiver on the garage door. Each needs to be physically set during install, but most owners could modify their settings(in both the transmitter and receiver) to change the code.

Many domestic fan/light combinations also have a similar 4 toggle setup so that each fan can be controlled without setting all the other fans/lights in the house to the same setting, or conversely to enable multiple fans in one room to be controlled together.

These are both analog, in that you need to physically set the DIL switches manually, but will then provide you with "remote" control.

If you wanted, I'm certain that you could set two in series, giving you 256 combinations. Probably need a local sparky to make some of the connections in a safe and compliant manner.

Worthwhile watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcUpg-qAJ74

I am not going to post the ones that explain how easy it is to open the garage in the first hand.

But it sure just needs a toy!

Check out some you tube videos that explain how un-secure garage door openers are.

And then watch those that tell you what to do about it.

Oh here you go. This one was the one I saw earlier https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNodxp9Jy4A

This is just one pick, there is plenty more!

All the best!

Please tell us a little more about what is driving your request. Are you in an area where you fear a higher than normal risk of people trying to defeat the (low) security of current garage door systems? Do you have rentals or some other situation where the people with access permissions change frequently? Is this just a DIY project where you want more security than the average garage door opener? Are you just looking for a DIY project without having a security issue driving it? Are "off the wall" ideas like using the IR signals from universal TV remotes (with "channel numbers" as codes) as a DIY hobby project of interest? A few more details might help focus the responses.

I've known people from your island. Just curious, which city are you in?

It's a DIY project and I am simply not interested in opening up to whoever comes around.

I live in the Philippines, on the island of Negros.

No need to worry about the garage door opener, just put keyed locks on both sides....

...and video surveillance....

Every garage door opener I have seen on the market for the past 20 years has what are called "rolling codes" built-in now. What that means is that every time you use the remote, it changes the code, and the transceiver in the opener tells the remote what the new code is, until the next time it is used, at which time it is changed again. this is what prevents someone from driving down the street pushing a remote button and seeing which garages open up.

Good to know about rolling codes. I'm curious as to how many individual codes exist; I'm pretty sure there are fewer than in, say, a four-digit access code.

My "model" if I can call it that is the common appliance remote control, which has on/off capability and the means to receive and interpret numbers (channel dial-in). The functions I need are: system on/off, access code selection, left brake on/off, right brake on/off (or a single toggle switching on the left brake OR the right brake).

I think most garage door opener systems you can buy today use rolling codes. I haven't seen the ones with the dip switches for a while. It would be easy to tell which they use. I haven't bought an opener recently but I would hope that ones that allow an internet connection don't require it. If they did then you wouldn't be able to use it in a place that didn't have internet.

While pointed out that a rolling code system can be defeated it really isn't that easy. I tend to find most criminals aren't even sophisticated enough to crack the easier fixed 8 bit code or really any rf system. At some point someone would likely just break a window or find some other physical means of access.

That said I have personally recorded the rolling code from my car remote and replayed it with an SDR system like in the video successfully unlocking my car. I have also copied an RFID card and unlocked a door. Finally picking a standard pin tumbler lock isn't that difficult either.

The point is I think a lot of engineers could by pass some sort of security measure if they wanted, thankfully most criminals aren't engineers. The go to tools for most criminals aren't SDR systems or even lock picks but hammers and crowbars, or even just a brick, which truthfully can more effective as long as you don't care what you destroy.

My gate has no windows. The basement, to which the garage doors give access, will have no windows.

The point is really to discourage persistent, but non-professional, intruders. There will for example be a means of bypassing the garage door opening/closing mechanism protected by a cam-keyed lock, to be used during our multiple power failures.

What started this quest is the "toys" that supposedly grant access to anybody's home.

To be honest with you there does not seem to be a correct answer. The closest is the one where the man suggest you use the good old fashioned door lock.

For several years I tried to do the same thing. I was never sure if it was the jet fighter and their electronics or the HAM radio operator a couple of blocks away that kept triggering my automatic door opener. My solution was to put a light switch in the power line to turn off the door opener when I was not going out any more that day. I lost the ability to open the door when coming home until I went inside and physically turned on the door. No problems since.

Hi there I have built one of the previous models from Oatley Electronics in Australia and used it for a number of years. They can also be used to control other devices for the joy of playing around.

Here is the latest model reference; http://oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=1152.

I hope this may be of help and not too costly for you in the Philippines.

On their web site just select the remote control tab and there are other items that may interest you. I have dealt with them for over 25 years and bought all manner of projects and test gear from them.

Regards

A few years Ago there was a guy on "Shark Tank", A TV show with multi billionaires

willing to give people with new ideas a helping hand, Who had an idea on securely locking a garage door but I don't recall exactly how it worked. Maybe You could check back on previous shows and find it.

You could use a wifi switch to turn the power on/off to the garage door opener...I have these on lights so I can turn them on/off with the phone app...I do have battery backups on the lights and wifi though, and also the video surveillance...

Interesting. Will look into whether these things will take the wattage of a slide-type opener.

You only need to control the power to the control, not necessarily the motor itself....

So here's an idea: Unplug your garage door operator, plug in a remote controlled receptacle, plug the operator into it and just shut it off from the car as you leave.
