San Diego Firestorm 2007: Smoke Filtration?

10/23/2007 4:44 PM

with the poor air quality due to the smoke from firestorm 2007 here in SD, are we getting any benefits from our central/window mount air conditioners? Is there any filter that would provide better filtration for smoke? Any suggestions?

You might try a loose carbon filter for the smoke smell, however I would put some additional filters on the outside temporarily just to filter out some additional debris that might be getting into the unit.

This would have to be very free flowing filters so not to over task the unit.

also this would have to be TEMPORARY ONLY, anything like this permantly will reduce the cooling capacity of your unit.

Refrigerated central air recirculates.

If you want to de-smell the house, create positive pressure inside the house with a simple fan pulling in outside air through an open window (sealing around the fan case to the rest of the window) and filter this air on the suction side of the fan with the charcoal filter or whatever ever else is recommended by filtration people (Google air filtration - purification). Positive pressure will keep all smells going outside. Enter / exit the house quickly so positive pressure will build up quickly again inside. You will not overpressure your house with a normal box fan. Keep it on low speed.

My daughter lives in Oceanside and her entire house is covered in ash and stink. Fire is 20+ miles away as of 23 Oct PM.

To see if it works, you can light a wooden match near a leak point (around a door or window frame, or electrical outlet) and blow it out and watch the smoke trail creep out (we hope).

Hey . . don't drop the lit match in the house !

"Is there any filter that would provide better filtration for smoke? Any suggestions?"

Ordinary A/C filters will get dirty from the smoke but are useless as far as removing smoke particles. HEPA filters would be applicable, but expensive and you still need the housing and fan capability.

The above advice seems good to follow.

Also a negative ION generator in each room will precipitate any further dust that may be around out of the air.

Put an old mat in front of it on the floor to collect the dust particles, machine wash occasionally.

Make sure that you do not breath the particles in as some are possibly nano size and could be dangerous.....
