Problem With Windows Media Player in Vista

10/25/2007 4:40 AM

My win-vista became unstable and I run recovery on it. all other tools and drivers are working properly now including credential manager that originally caused the instability. Only my wmp is not working. the error message is "The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.6000.6336 where 11.0.6000.6324 was expected. wmp is not installed properly and must be reinstalled and all attempt to reinstall failed what can I do?

Although I can not help you with this problem I do have a comment for future responders. Apparently Vista has more problems than they wish to say. Numerous people I know have stated that they cannot run AutoCad on this fantacular MS product of the new millenium.

Yea MS. You've done it again. Put out an unstable product at an infalted price that serves no good purpose!

Numerous people I know have stated that they cannot run AutoCad on this fantacular MS product of the new millenium.

You can run ACAD under Vista.

ACAD 2008 is Vista compatible out-of the-box.

ACAD 2007 requires Service Pack 2.

ACAD 2006 and older requires a workaround. Instead of clicking on the icon to open the program, right-click and choose Run As Admisntrator from the menu that pops up. You will still get a message about the compatibility issue, but you are allowed to run the program anyway, and it should work just fine. However, if you are using a much older release (older than 2004), if you have problems later on because of the compatibility issue, you are on your own.

I know this because it is my job. I provide software installation support. I do not work for Autodesk or Microsoft, but I do work for an outfit that is under contract with the company that distributes the student versions of Autodesk products.

As for the original poster's problem, I can't say much. I have seen on some of the online discussions that the User Account Control feature of Vista can cause problems with software installation. Look in the Windows Help files for info on how to access it, and then turn it off. While you are at it, turn off the Vista firewall, and use a different one if you want to have one. It helps to have all firewalls and antivrus programs turned off while trying to install software. You can turn them back on later.

When will SP2 be released for Vista? I understood, not before 2008......

I am a happy WinXP Pro user at this time, but I like to be aware of what Vista is doing/going.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I wasn't refering to a Service Pack for Vista, but to one available from Autodesk for ACAD 2007.

If anyone needs that SP for ACAD 2007, you can find it here.

If all these geniuses that like to sit around and bitch about Microsoft were to actually do something like write their own operating system, maybe there would be something better out there. But no, all they want to do is bitch.

Run what the IT Pros run on their home computers, Windows 2000 Professional.

So far it and Win 98 SE are the most stable products to come out of Redmond.

Basically do you want Flash or Function?

Remember to reset your bios to their original configuration. I've had to reload MS Vista THREE times so far. Should have went with Linux or XT pro.

Vista also has the habit of explorer hanging if you open to many windows without rebooting. Acts like a buffer issue. I'll be surfing the web and fined after much digging (research) what I'm looking for and have to reboot to copy or link. Very frustrating.

Took a little doing but Alibre Design works well on it.

Time to go before I speak my mind.

Re: Problem With Windows Media Player in Vista

Too many are buying PCs and Laptops with Vista already installed......if you look around, there are still (cheap) offers for such hardware with no OS involved, or at most a free Linux....

Vista needs at least 2 years to become docile, maybe even more.....anyone using it is just doing Beta testing for MS.....no more, no less.....

I buy from these sorts of offers for Laptops without OS and I have always built my own PCs to my own spec from scratch.....not the cheapest method but there is nothing on then to upset the owner!!! I can fix them easily or expand them....

A previous PC I built some 4-5 years ago I built using recommended IBM disks, they were so bad that for the first few months, I never knew when I switched it on if the disk would come up or not.....my supplier was great, after many, many replacements, he swapped them for better ones as IBM would only send me replacements of exactly the same type (an updated version was by then available, but not for customers with the previous version in Germany!!!!)......

IBM had to get out of the business (totally unprofessional from front to back) and sold out to Hitachi.

I vote with my wallet always, so I NEVER BUY IBM EQUIPMENT FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER!!!! They F****D me enough for about 4 months, never ever again!!!!

I used to own a number of computer stores and for years built my own boxes, since 1983 (Computer Parts Galore in Batavia New York). Now I am retired and do not game. So I find the cheapest reasonable box is one of the so called refurbished boxes from Gateway etc. They are actually new boxes, sold and returned by someone who changes their mind, but the law says they cannot ve sold as new again as they have a prior purchaser. They come with an OS, but I can wipe it and get the remaining driver set from the OEM site if I do that.

If you buy with Vista, make sure you have 2 gig of memory as a minimum, even on a laptop. I bought my daughter a laptop and she has no problems since I upped it from 1 o 2 gig. Prior to that it was very sluggish.

Vista might be OK for someone who goes online and does their email, writes a few letters etc., but for anyone with video applications and a large hardware & software investment, it is plain terrible.....

I have enough good friends with hair raising Vista (expensive) experiences NOT to try it myself, at least not yet. Some have just given the PC up and got their money back...within 7 to 10 days, the truth dawns....

Looking at the internet, it would appear that I and they are not alone....

It is very automated. I disagree from experience. Vista is so big it will be a beta for years. I thought I could work some of the wrinkles out. You can dig in for days and not find what you are looking for. $200.00US in manuals to find out you can't do anything but comandline fixes the same and then they don't act like older OS's.

I didn't start digging till after I had problems. I'd give it at least 2 more years till I would get it. Not a happy camper.

Sadly (and for one that knows what he is doing as you appear to!) you are most probably typical.

Not that this comment helps or makes you feel better, but I wish it did!

There's someone bigger than IBM now!

This problem with WMP may not just be with Vista - the latest update for XP Home is giving me problems with opening about 10% of allegedly compatible files: all I get is a screen of little coloured blocks, but the sound is fine!

I got the solution from MS windows live chat room.

Just go to the registry editor and remove the registry keys as below but copy the strings before deletion as back up in case............

*Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\wmp.dll

*Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\wmploc.dll

*Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\wmplayer.exe

The wmploc.dll was the only problem my machine had and that was all I deleted leaving the other two.

Thank you for all your contributions.
