The difference between AC and DC Motors

The main difference is how they are powered. Motors are powered by current. There are two main classes of currents, AC and DC. AC means Alternating Current and DC means Direct Current. These classes can be further broken down (Three Phase, Single Phase, Europeon Voltage, American Voltage, etc.

Hi, The very basic difference is that in AC motor the Stator is supplied by electrical supply and in DC motor Rotor is supplied by electrical DC supply and ofcource AC supply for AC motors and DC supply for DC motors. for detail theory you should refer folowing link, it will help you. AC Motor

Ordinary alternating current is the type found in most homes. The voltage varies sinusoidally, reaching peaks of +/- 170 volts or 120 volts (RMS). The impedance of anything connected to a 120 volt AC source will limit the current through it, which also varies sinusoidally. Imagine a coil of wire wrapped around an iron rod to form a solenoid with enough impedance to be connected to 120 volt AC source and not cause a fire. Now, imagine placing a permanent magnet near one end of the solenoid iron core. The magnet will be alternately attracted and repelled by the magnetic field of the solenoid 60 times per second. If the magnet were attached to an axle that restrained it from touching the end of the iron core but allowed it to flip its north pole toward the solenoid when its end is a south magnetic pole, and vice versa, then you're close to making an AC motor, but the magnet will have a tendency to sit still (as far as the human senses can tell) or vibrate at 60 cycles per second with its magnetic poles at right angles to the axis of the solenoid. What's needed is some angular momentum and a helping hand to start it running in the direction desired. There are various ways in which this is done in practical AC motors, but we won't get into this now. Let's say that you also mount a flywheel on the axle that the permanent magnet is mounted, and let's say that you spin it in a clockwise direction by hand. If the magnetic fields are strong enough, and the mass of the flywheel is low enough to be accelerated by the magnetic fields, then the motor will eventually reach a speed of 3600 RPM. To improve the performance of such a motor, bend the solenoid into an open circular shape so that the other end of the solenoid is near the permanent magnet on the other side.

Compare the applications of a DC and an AC motor for contrasting modern electrical installations.

dc motor high speed motor control to rectiffer & dc motor high speed motor & maintance cost very high & dc motor used carbon brushes &dc motor working 60 hz.

ac motor normal speed control to starter & ac motor maximum speed & maintance cost very low & ac motor working 50 hz
