How to Improve Fiber Coupling Effiency?

01/06/2020 8:41 PM

Generally, the coupling efficiency of optical fiber is about 80%~90%. Is there any way to improve the coupling efficiency?

Yes. Make the cable shorter.

Maybe Coupling Gel...

"Description: SS-988 is a non-curing optical coupling gel developed to eliminate losses in fiber optic cable splices. As an optical couplant, it is transparent and offers high clarity and transmission."

Single mode or multimode?

Single mode fibre has a (core) refractive index of 1.4475, and clearly you want to find an interface gel or liquid with the same refractive index at the frequency you're transmitting at. You might be able to experiment with solutions of glucose a bit greater than 60% , but bear in mind that you would need to seal the whole joint to prevent it drying out.

Silicone has a lower refractive index, but, the gel Rixter mentioned may have some special additive to make it up.

I can't find a refractive index for mutimode, but as that's generally used for shorter distances the losses may not matter. Stepped or graded index would be really difficult , but again probably doesn't matter that much.
