Big enough for the essential functions and furnishings. A galley kitchen is narrow, but long enough for a sink, stove, refrigerator, and sometimes barely.

A bedroom is big enough for a bed and Hopefully a chest of drawers and a closet.

A living room is big enough for a sofa, coffee table and television.

Then there's the tiny house movement as well as Mcmansions.

Non standard rooms are normal in old homes... If there was a standard.

The only "standard" I'm aware of is for prefabricated homes. All rooms should be smaller than the trailer taking them to the site. Going larger requires an oversize load permit for the transport.

I still have a drafting board with a mechanical protractor arm (Vemco Detailer 3500). Walnut and cherry wood trim and pencil trough. A pleasure to look at and to use. Among a drawer of drafting aids (French curves, flexible curves, circle templates, etc.), and a set of old India ink instruments, there is a plastic template (Berol RapiDesign) with standard sizes of ranges, refrigerators, wall cabinets, sinks, counters, bathtubs, toilets, shower stalls, doors and their swing clearances...and more. All in 1/4"=1'-0" scale. These various elements are to a standard, but not the rooms into which they fit. How big is a grey suit?

My old computer quit last month with the last working version of my cadd program. Semi retired now, so didn't want to spend the $$$ and learning curve to go to a new cadd system. Was thinking about my old drafting equipment that the company just had hauled off last fall and thinking 'why didn't I..' Add to my list electric eraser, erasing shields. Still have the first side wheel instruments I bought in jr. high school about 1956. -- JHF

I acquired my drafting table about 20 years ago when my son's high school got rid of all their drafting equipment. Tech students learn cad now but aren't taught how to draw. I put a new pad on the board and trimmed it out in walnut and cherry. Most of my drafting instruments I inherited from my father. He was the drafting supervisor at Canadian General Electric - back when final drawings were penned in India ink. Cad is a very powerful tool, but I still like to put pencil to paper. Recently, I took a drawing to a local machine shop to have them make something up for me. The owner studied the drawing. "Nice," he said, "We don't often see hand drawings any more."

I was never very good at inking, it didn't mater how hard I tried, I always managed to slide a T Square or triangle through the wet ink! Maybe we should write a book on drafting in cursive for the new kids, then hide and watch. HA HA -- JHF

Printing was (and still is) my weakness. Whenever I could persuade my dad I got him to do the printing on my school poster board projects. He could do it so fast and yet the result was impeccable. Years and years of practice. I was in awe of his printing skill.

Of course, I should have used the term "lettering" rather than "printing" (Mr. Vasiga, my drafting instructor would be very disappointed with me). Here is a photo of my home set-up. The vertical track is lagged into the wall. The shelves are height-adjustable on the track, and the drawing surface is height adjustable and angle-adjustable via angled struts back to track - so no clutter of legs under. LED strip lighting behind the shelf valence. Swing-arm light adjustable for intensity and colour temperature. Small drawer cabinet to the right for various items. Walnut, cherry, aluminum.

The size of the room depends upon your standard of living.

In the United States, a common size is about 3.66 meters by 6.10 meters in a middle-class home.

Living room? At what point or dimension does living have to be great?

I am curious, if the question were asked what is the minimum space one requires for a living room, what kind of responses that would draw? Clearly, the responses have demonstrated there is no maximum size, provided one has the resources to clean and maintain it. But what is the minimum space we need to still feel comfortable? Who grew up with tiny bedrooms and how did that shape you?

The question for a minimum size would probably need multiple answers depending on family size.

A "standard" is whatever suits the owner. My standard is 15' x 15' x 10'

Everyone else will be different.

Re: What is Standard Size of Living Room?

The amount of floorspace thought adequate varies widely from country to country. I've seen a figure quoted for north America of 1100sq ft or 100m2 per person whilst a 'normal' three bedroom dwelling in the UK housing a family of four will typically be 120-150m2. European housing is of a similar size; have a look at Dan-Wood's designs or room designs from IKEA. The smallest of European designs would be seen as roomy compared to urban living in Japan

These norms are driven, I suspect, by population density. You will have therefore to look locally for information. Local building standards/ codes may tell you about the acceptable size for bedrooms, WCs, shower rooms &c but living rooms/ lounges may be less prescribed and you will have to look at plans for properties for sale or new builds to gauge this.

Hope this helps.

I cannot think of any "standard" sizes. Any room can be a "standard" room as long as it is built to all the pertinent codes.

No.

A master bedroom that doesn't hold at least a queen sized bed would be considered substandard regardless of build quality.

..urban Japanese are free to weigh in on this.

I don't even know how many living rooms are in this house and I'm sure the owner doesn't care if any of them are a standard size or shape.

The last photo looks like a foyer, most likely not a standard size foyer!

That place has 123 rooms with only 14 bedrooms and 27 bathrooms....what a money pit...

Re: What is Standard Size of Living Room?

Of course there is no maximum size of a living room or any other room, but curious, I pulled out my old (1970) Canadian Code for Residential Construction to see if, by Code, there were minimum sizes, and sure enough, there are. There are minimum size standards for every room in the house, including closets. For example, with respect to living rooms: "Living areas within dwelling units either as separate rooms or in combination with other spaces shall have at least 145 sq. ft. of floor area and shall have no dimension less than 9 ft. 10 in. within the required area." There is also a table for minimum required ceiling heights in various rooms. I looked online for current Code standards, and little has changed, except for dimensions now being stated in metric rather than imperial. I suspect other countries also have minimum room size standards.

Many of these posts demonstrate the point that dwelling size standards are, forgive the pun, a cultural norm.

This won't be an answer unless you are in the UK but it shows why houses here are small and getting smaller and might show what sort of resource to look at locally:

Good luck!
