An odd question - kind of like an artist asking, could someone please tell me what to paint?
How about a history of smart houses and housing security systems - it only goes back about 30 years (man traps and trip wires pre-date electronic security, so presumably you would exclude them).
In the early 90's I sold a system I had put together for telephone control of vacation home heating systems. It enabled a city dweller to phone the vacation home and turn the heat on (or up) before leaving; and if there was a change of plans, a phone call could turn the heat off (or down). There was no incremental adjustment. It was either on/off, or a toggle between an unoccupied setting (7 C) and an occupied (comfort) setting. Nevertheless, people were amazed. They were so amazed that few had the courage to purchase this seemingly Buck Rogers technology. How things have changed since then - now whole house security monitoring and control is possible by phone, and the public thinks nothing of it.

The 'Smart House' thing (highly overrated in my opinion) is over the top.
I am rebuilding my home, compliments of the previous tenant setting the house afire. New kitchen appliances, the gas stove and the microwave are connected via bluetooth, and can be controlled by a phone app. The icemaker and temperatures (four zones) in the fridge/freezer are controllable with an app, and the dishwasher has one. Three apps. All appliances are the same manufacturer.
But... if the house catches fire the fire detection system rings an alarm in the house but does not send an alert to the fire department. That may be useful, but isn't available without some very large equipment expenses.
As an aside, I do the model train thing. I have some locomotives that are controllable by bluetooth.
Cheating is just a way of kicking the can of failure further down the road...and with each kick the impending failure becomes potentially more spectacular...
