Advantages Of Star Delta Transformer

10/26/2007 10:26 AM

In our switchyard we have used a 220KV/6.6KV transformer for distribution? I want to know why only this configuration has been choosen...is there any specific advantage...can anyone help me please?

Type "star delta" into google - you'll find out all about it.

Because the power system engineer designed it that way???

Maybe they ran across a good deal on a large number of 6.6kV/240V step-down transformers which more than offset the cost of larger conductors and higher ratio transformers.

Typically, long-distance transmission lines are kept at high voltage. Are the 6.6kV lines covering any significant distance? Here (US), it's not uncommon to have 7.2kV distribution lines running through residential, commercial and light industrial areas.

I feel it is because the zero sequence currents circulate themselves within the delta loop, thereby safeguarding the load, without getting it overloaded.

and since from the supply side most of the times we take star, for the load side or secondary side, when we need more current, and less voltage(Il=√3 Iph and Vl= Vph) we get delta to supply different loads.

thank you madam so musch for your reply....but can u tell me how can we restrict fault level in delta ,i read that it is easy to reduce fult level of trafo in delta side than in star side how??

National standards? It would be more common to find 132kV/33kV/11kV in the UK.

The first point to be borne in mind is the type of system grounding.

Normally the load side has its source grounded. Therefore, the 6.6kV side would be grounded.

if this is so, one has to provide means to zero sequence circulate and this would be the reason for chosing a delta winding.

If the system is ungrounded this might not be necessary, but you must, conversely , take some other things into accounte, such as insulation level of the 6.6kV system, fault discrimination, windings and cables insulation, lightning arrester ratings and so on.

Regards
