horse trailer electic brakes

10/27/2007 4:20 PM

how can I tell if my horse trailer has electric brakes? I see no blue wire, only red & brown from the brake area, and my brake controller isn't registering any connection...although I could have it wired wrong. could these red & brown wires be for lights only?

tes, DC resistance to ground of both wires. Then remove all bulbs, test again.

The brake will have a solenoid coil to ground snf that resistance will not change.

where you remove the bulbs it will go very high.

How 'bout a mirror to see if you have electric wires going into your brake drums from the inner side -- can't think of any other reason for electrics there. Do your wire tracing as above after this step -

Red and brown are used for trailer wiring and repairs. Your best bet is to get under the trailer and like it was said before to look at the brake drums. You mentioned "brake area", if your trailer is a single axle and under 3500 gvw it may not have brakes. If your trailer connector only has 4 pins (flat connector) you don't have brakes or they are not wired. If this is a used trailer and you do have brakes you may want to rewire it to the correct connector. If so you might check each brake and adjust them by applying 12v to each drum. You might as well repack the wheel bearings while you are at it....

Guest, this may come as rude, so be it, but if you need to ask us such simple questions that you could really answer with a flash light and getting underneath yourself, then you should not be doing anything other than going to a trailer specialist and asking him!!!!

Anything else could just get dangerous!!! especially if you start touching the wiring.....or testing with or without bulbs etc....

Generally, the people who answer mean well and they know what they are talking about....but this problem has a strong safety aspect too.....

This brings to mind my funny trailer story,

I have a 22' Hurricane Deck boat on a tandem Magic Tilt trailer. My truck is lifted 10" and runs 37" meat and I didn't originally have enough of a lowered trailer hitch to really make the trailer truck dynamic work well. I discovered this, not at the ramp but rather that night as I tried to back down the trailer in my yard. My truck is a 350 Ford diesel and thus not afraid of torque loads or afraid of a little force applied to move said truck and trailer. As I put the rig in reverse on the ramp green slime or whatever (perhaps truck trailer angle) prevented me from noticing I was plowing the trailer in reverse. However looking out a side mirror as I backed the trailer down in my yard explained the need to feather the throttle on reverse. Two neat corn rows where the four tires were firmly locked up - only in reverse - I had to use the little key gizmo to disengage the hydraulic brake.

I am so glad this was discovered on the second day of ownership and not as I tore up a tire on a ramp or a parking lot. I should add I'm a trailer maintenance freak and we don't roll until the trailer checks. The permanent fix - a 10" forged aluminum drop down hitch.

One more note - Fords have a fuse that controls only the parking lights on trailer. To my chagrin brake lights work, turn signals work, hazards work, electric brake assist works , but no running lights - its a fuse easily blown and all it does is do the running lights. Fought that one for a week until I gave up and asked the dealer - even he had to look it up .

Your mileage may vary . . .

red is aux. brown is lights, yellow and green are for turn signals and brakes. Look at your hitch if its big and bulky with a fluid receiver it is most likely surge brakes which work mechanical not electric. They use hyd. so if the hitch is bulky no electric if not look for wires coming out behind the hub near the axle. ???? how old is the trailer???

If these wires are coming from your trailer hub then you most likely have brakes. Your trailer lights work from your truck brakes not your trailer brakes. Most electric trailer brakes work because of a electro-magnet and there are a ton of reasons why they may not work. Most of the time when I repair these brakes I find the problem due to 2 main reasons. The most common problem is a short or cross of the wiring or bad ground. The next common problem is that the brakes have not been used in awhile and have become rusty and need a good cleaning. You can get replacement parts for these electric brakes but there are literally hundreds of different styles of magnets and the parts can be costly especially if they are older. I would suggest you pull the hubs off, clean all parts and check for damage first. Allot of people rely on the hitch connection to ground the trailer and although this works dirt and/or rust can cause a bad ground. Try hooking up a direct ground wire from the truck to the trailer and use a test light to check the wiring.
