Fever Detection via Infrared Imaging

03/30/2020 4:39 PM

It seems to me that rather than taking everybody's temperature individually they could just scan the line of people and redirect those with higher temperatures to be individually tested....might speed things up a bit...

I guess I'm not the first to think of this...

A nice advance. However, something further may be needed to detect asymptomatic persons who are nonetheless contagious.

I almost picked one of these up before the holidays.. as a present to me (i want to see what walls are poorly insulated) but the low cost units mysteriously went up in price for the holidays and shipping times were too long. I never got back to it, but thought about it again last month for this very use.

I remember this technique was proposed post 9/11 to look for nervous people in an airport setting.

If I were going to travel soon, I'd jump at getting one. .

Nobody likes to have a laser thermometer pointed at them and these are way more informative too!

Incredibly priced compared to a few years ago..

a lot of different styles available for less that $100!!

pocket size!

..these used to be 20K.. now 57 bucks!

I looked at those to. There are a few to choose from. Probably quite sufficient for most needs.

My current predicament is that my good phone jumped out of my shirt pocket a couple weeks ago (dumb me) and the edge of the screen cracked in a way that it's unusable. When I finally went to my cellular repair shop last week.. it's closed!

This backup doesn't have the usb-c so I'd be in a pickle if I got one that was port specific.

Very useful tool for one that seems like a toy..

Kinda like an e-bike.

I've had a FLIR-ONE for my iPhone(6) for a number of years, and it's definitely NOT just a toy. It has led to significant safety improvements in wiring and to savings of tens of thousands of dollars in energy bills.

On the other hand, screeners must accept that 98.6°F or 37°C is NOT the normal body temperature for every human, and the face temperature does depend on the environment to which the individual has been exposed during the previous 15 minutes to an hour or so.

I happen to like cool air blowing on my head/face, as long as the rest of my body is warm, so I'd probably look different to a scanner viewing us as we disembark from a plane.

My son and I were at a trade show.

He runs a little more warm than most and relishes cool weather.

We both stood in front of a flir display and he was visibly warmer even though we were dressed alike, ate the same, walked the same etc.

He would definitely be flagged as suspicious

...thanks for sharing your experience.

At work we have several FLIR E6 imaging cameras for radiant floor trouble shooting and I ent ahead and scanned everyone at work. External scanning results depend a lot on ambient conditions and were somewhat inconclusive. I did get meaningful results if I had them say AHH and I scanned their open mouths. Three indicated higher than the rest and two identified as currently fighting colds.

If you are sick with a fever and bundled up under uniform environmental conditions these cameras make it easy to pick out a feverish person since tey will resolve 1/10 degree F or better.

We did have the discussion one day over whether the camera could pick up a zombie. We concluded that joint friction would generate enough of a heat rise to have the zombie show up as movement in a scan.

Zombie joint movement?

Sounds like the name of a grunge band.

Thanks for the anecdotes.

Very interesting.

In the current situation of medical shortages and over stressed medical staff,it is easy to make mistakes.

There have been reports of using rectal thermometers for testing oral temperature.

It is important to know the difference for yourself.

Say what?

Two words for those making that "mistake"

Second word is holes!

There is a very simple way to tell the difference.

Not always. For some people, the two ends are interchangeable.

I have to confess that I don't believe I've ever seen a rectal thermometer, nor even a photo of one, so I don't know whether the difference would be obvious or not.

For either opening, the thermometer should be sterilized before use, so it should safely give a correct reading either way, shouldn't it?

The main difference is the taste...

An old school glass rectal thermometer is slightly larger diameter and somewhat more robust than a standard oral thermometer. As long as it's clean you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Many Ausies returning home in February and early March commented that they didn't see anyone checking them, but the news media was showing (supposedly) control room imaging of the airline passengers coming to the immigration and passport check stations.

I suspect that "big brother" is already doing his job and advising corridor staff which people needed closer examination.

Seems like they can slap one of these scanners on a satellite, do a fly over, then call out the army to set up quarantine zones.
