Some inductive pick-ups have no internal electronics, and they should have only two leads and test as a coil with fairly low DC resistance. However, some inductive pick-ups have built-in electronics with three or more leads, and these can be tested by connecting power and testing for output when ferrous metal is nearby.
Magnetic pick-ups shouldn't give output unless magnet is nearby.

The terms "magnetic" and "inductive" can apply to the same type of pick-up. In my experience these kinds of pick-ups consist either as a coil wound around a ferrite core, or as a coil wound around a magnet. In the latter case the pick-ups were used to detect the passage of gear teeth for tachometric applications.
