Dairy Farmers Dumping Milk

04/05/2020 11:08 AM

I recently red about dairy farmers dumping their milk because the market had collapsed.

It would seem like a good idea to make cheese, which requires aging, from the cheap milk.Of course the current cheese producers would be quickly overloaded with milk.

Also casein glue can be made from milk, and powdered milk can be stored indefinitely.

Also freezing the milk is ok.I do it all the time. Then again, who has freezers big enough.A very complicated problem with no easy answers,I just hate to see food wasted.

All constructive feedback is appreciated.

Farmers dumping their milk, lack of demand (with restaurants, schools, etc on lockdown), supermarkets limiting to 1 gallon of milk per purchase due to lack of supply.

you need people to make cheese, the essentials do not feel it’s worth it. They maybe realizing essential also means sacrificial.

If a refrigerated truck full of milk showed up in any town with a notice to bring your own containers, "free milk while supplies last", the milk would disappear before it could be dumped and wasted. A make shift PVC manifold could provide a dozen taps 10 feet apart in 60 minutes with nothing more than A few cheap parts and glue.

Until the fear of financial and legal liability is removed from such acts of humanitarian care, people will starve while the milk is bought, paid for and dumped.

Horrible !!

Cows have to be fed and milked regardless of the demand.

They are very expensive to keep if they do not provide a profit.

I think they will start selling the cows and the price of beef will come down, but there will be a lot of low quality beef in the stores.Even the best quality dairy cows are not fat,and the meat is dry and tough.Lots of 80/20 hamburger will hit the shelves.

The economy will take a big hit even after the virus is quelled, milk prices will be sky high, along with other dairy products because they won't have enough dairy cattle to meet demand.

And you can't buy a milk cow--they have to have a calf before they can make milk,so it takes a while.

There will be a domino effect across all of the economy from other similar situations.

I think we are headed for inflation, followed by recession afterwards.

Just my opinion.

I hope I am wrong.

The dairy price problem predates the corona virus.

The problems are cultural, systemic, and political. Without getting too political, I will state that that one of the largest problems the dairy farmers have faced continually over the last 50 years has been government price support policies. By artificially supporting dairy prices when they get extremely low, government policy has kept a lot of marginal operations in business. While it sounds good politically to help the "family farms", it also keeps an excess supply of milk on the market so prices stay low. The end result is that dairy farmers are kept on the edge of just barely getting by.

While this may be good for the country as a whole because it keeps food costs down and the supply stable for the general public, it certainly doesn't help the dairy industry in the long run. If the free market were allowed to operate within reason (I do think some regulation is probably necessary due to the time to grow herds), I think the dairy industry would be much stronger, but dairy goods prices at the consumer level would probably be higher and much less stable.

There are other many other cultural issues that contribute to the problems as well that I won't take the time to get into here.

In the U.S, back in ‘96 the farmers were getting the same price for their milk as in the late 70’s.

That doesn't make sense. About the only stores open are grocery stores. The last time I went to one there was no soy milk of the variety I buy. Cheese was in short supply too.

When are they going to stop calling various vegetative concoctions milk.

Milk by definition is "an opaque white fluid rich in fat and protein, secreted by female mammals for the nourishment of their young."

These are just vegetable derivatives marketed as milk to con the consumer by aligning their products to milk. Enough is enough!

What should we call the Milky Way galaxy?

The word Galaxy itself is derived from the Greek galakt which means milk.

demand should dictate supply,... this is a somewhat different situation.

with the schools and restaurants closed, that’s a huge outlet.

The fluid milk plants I’m sure has enough ‘extra’ capacity. The problem would be employee’s.

as far as making cheese, you still need employees, and any extra milk from the milk plants, they won’t have the capacity.

Reminds me of reading The Grapes of Wrath, were people were starving but the Californian orange growers were literally dumping their oranges (in the river) to maintain prices.

Bee hive brand m-8 Nonfat dry milk

Bee hive supply co

Nutrition information : per 100 grams dry weight moisture 3.0%

Butterfat 0.9%

Protein 36.9%

Lactose 51.0%

Ash 8.2%

Vacuum and nitrogen packed to maximize storage life.

I bought 2 cans about 10 years ago and used one, the milk was milky white and tasted delicious. There is no expiration date on can . This product can last 30 - 50 years in storage.

Based on the storage time, dairies and processors should be able to take excess milk, dry and can it for future use.
