Chimney Stack Height of Gas Fired Boiler

04/20/2020 1:23 AM

I am a trainee in my field I want to ask a question that we are purchasing a gas fired boiler its stack height as per vendor is 20 meter can any one explain to me that best engineering practice that stack height should be greater or less, what is relation of draft pressure vs height, is draft required more why?

The local authority's Planning Office is a good place to start. The stack height is related to the local terrain and the local population density.

The <...vendor...> is another good place to ask about <...stack height...>. That the organisation can sell these things confidently indicates a level of expertise in the area.

It's worth a phone call or three, perhaps?

In addition to the pollution considerations mentioned by AP #2, B&W Boilers Handbook Steam, Its Generation and Use, has a chapter on calculating draft based on height, temperature difference of air, and other considerations.

The boiler design will dictate minimum draft requirements, especially if a water tube design with no induced draft fan. Many smaller fire tube designs operate with positive furnace draft, need no draft at all to operate, just primary forced draft air fans at the burner.

Dear Friend,

You have not mentioned in which place/country your boiler is installed or to be installed. Mainly it is governed by Local Pollution Control Board regulations.

Generally more the height of the chimney, higher the natural draught, but blindly we cannot decide and increase the height as cost considerations, wind forces of the area will play a vital role. Actual height calculated and the height declared by local regulation, which ever higher is to be followed.

The general formula used is

D = (0.52) x (P) x (H) x ((1/Tair) - (1/Tgas))

where in which

D=draft produced, measured in inches of water,
H=height of top of stack above grate bars in feet,
P=atmospheric pressure in pounds per square inch,
Tair=absolute atmospheric temperature, in Kelvin
Tgas=absolute temperature of stack/flue gases, in Kelvin

The above units are in FPS and use conversion factors for Metric. or IS units

1 Inch = 25.4 MM, 1 Foot = 0.3048 Metre. Temp.in Deg.C+273 = Deg.K., Atmospheric Pressure at Mean Sea Level (14.696) psi = (1.03) Kg./cm^2

Pl. Refer the link

and I am sure you will find it is helpful to you.

Also refer the below link and you will find plenty of links and you can read a lot and use asper your need.

Along with what has already been mentioned, one other item,... if near an airport, there is a limitation to total stack height as well as letting the airport know when it’s being erected.
