Rated Enclosure Class

04/21/2020 6:05 AM

Hi,

What is rated enclosure class 15? I have found it in a Siemens product specification but I couldn't gather further information from Siemens.

In the NEMA website, I found an enclosure class up to 13. What is 15? Or is it something else? If anyone is familiar, please help.

Thank you.

...so <...enclosure class 15...> should therefore read IP15.

I’ve never seen anything made to IP15 before. That would be somehow only be able to stop items larger than 55mm, but at the same time stop water???

More than likely it’s a typographical error.

IP65 = First Digit - Solids

The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts (electrical conductors, moving parts etc) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

IP65 = Second Digit - Liquids

The second digit defines the protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc).

Consider a pedestal mounted floor fan.

The guard keeps hands and fingers out.The exclusion is for objects up to 50 mm,not only 50 mm.They drop a 50 mm ball on the enclosure for testing.

The openings must not be larger than 50 MM.

The motor on the fan can be waterproof.

The hand could spill the water on the motor with no problem.

Make sense now?

IP refers to Intrusion Protection.

The 50MM refers to the maximum opening size in the enclosure.

A 50 mm ball should not pass through, such as a fan guard.

The motor on the fan inside of the enclosure can be waterproof, dust proof, etc.

Picture a pedestal fan with a guard over the fan blade but an enclosed motor and shaft.

Spilled water will pass through the guard, but will not intrude on the motor.

A single enclosure can do it all in some cases.

I too think so. Surprised, why IEC doesn't indicate any guidance!

Actually IP class was mentioned separately as IP23 for Transformer Panel and IP54 for MV/LV panel. But again rated enclosure class was mentioned as 15. That's why I am confusing.

The above specification is for a Ring Main Unit panel of 11kV/415V.

Thanks.

Something is wrong, then. Go back to the originator of the information, and ask there.

It only takes a chain of 6 phone calls to reach anyone on the planet. Try it and see whether or not it works!

What a lot of rubbish! May only work pre covid19 and when not dealing with an item manufactured in China, Korea or Taiwan, get real with your answers!

A company of the same quality as <...Siemens...> will have laid in provision for these difficult times and at the moment, the forum has no idea where Anonymous Poster #1 is on the planet and where the installation is located.

Invitation declined.

I am from India and the installation is located in city of Kolkata.

Anyway thanks for your suggestion. I'll have to check with the supplier.

What are some operational and maintenance difficulties that may arise with compact outdoor substation of 2mva? If anyone has practical experience please share.

All manner of things.

However, for a more concise local answer it would be best to contact directly people experienced in these things in the same general locality. The forum does not have their phone numbers nor the incentive to make the calls.

IP15.

First letter - 1 = protection for hand and items no smaller that 50mm.

Second letter - 5 = Protected from low pressure water jet (6.3mm) from any angle.

In other words you can't get your hand into it and you can hose it down.
