Designing Data Aquisition System

01/30/2006 8:46 AM

I've had a new Drain field installed at my facility. It contains electric actuated valves. These contain two microswitches each. 1= normaly open, 1= normaly closed. I want to transmit via wireless signal, real time data from the valves to my PC in my office For monitoring purposes only. I would like room for expansion to add more misc switches to monitor other operating systems in my plant. Where do I start? -- Every day above ground is a good day.

Hi. Go to a web site called www.shockwatch.com They make real time wireless process monitors which may be able to be used for your application. Regards, Simon Hancock.

North East Tech. Sale, has a battery operated wireless system. We use it and it works for us. Call and find out if it will work for you. The phone number is 215-513-1000.

Are the valves underground? Can you monitor the current in the microswitches?

Yes, and yes. I've already provided wire leads into a junction box above ground where I have 120volt power available.

As a simple start to monitoring the state of the switches, look at http://www.omega.com/toc_asp/subsectionSC.asp?subs ection=K&book=das&all=1 which is Omega Engineering's variety of wireless data transmitters and receivers. Hope this helps. If not, then, can you be a little more specific about how you would like to get your data?

Contact Monitoring

01/31/2006 8:35 AM

Note that if microswitches are used for monitoring make sure they have gold plated contacts (or are what is called self wiping). The current flow in typical IC circuits used for monitoring for an open/short condition is tiny, not sufficient to burn off any organic buildup that can occur on contact points, eventually giving a false open.
