Submarine Propulsion System

10/31/2007 10:39 AM

I am interested in the article about the submarine that used the Kerk Motion products for extending the shaft from motor to propeller. I need a system for 250psi. Can anyone give information on the product I should consider from Kirk products in relation to the recent Submarine contest.

Thanks for replies.

I think it's best that you contact them directly.

I'm not sure what you mean by "extending the shaft from motor to propeller". I doesn't seem to need anything special if all you want it so connect the motor to the prop.

If I misunderstood what you said, please say so.

Thanks for reply; I have designed a small submarine and completing the propulsion system. Most of what I'm doing I'm designing myself but can not come up with the proper seal for a rotating shaft. I want my vessel to exceed 250psi of water depth which is about 300 feet of water. I have some camera housing from Iklite that is rated for 200 feet with external camera controls. I am looking at the rubber washers to see what they have done. In a propulsion shaft I know I need a bearing system for the shaft to rest on and other water tight washers.

What is your shaft diameter?

Ah! You're referring to a shaft seal or stuffing box, I believe. I'm afraid that this is beyond my expertise but I've found a reference in Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuffing_box

I only learned about these things while watching Junkyard Wars a few years ago.

You might find some useful info if you google "stuffing box" +submarines or "shaft seals" +submarines. Good luck.

And adding to Vulcan's question,

What do you mean by "system for 250PSI?"

Wangito
