Millimeters to circular mils

11/01/2007 1:53 PM

Nothing quite like showing your ignorance right off the crack of the bat; but, I have a question to ask. Is there a formula for converting mm to AWG circular mils? I've spent at least half hour on the web and haven't been able to find anything. Can anyone help? I am dealing with cable sizes in 150mm and 95mm.

Circular mils is the diameter of the wire in decimal inches x 1000, squared. For example, a 3/8" wire is 0.375" therefore CM=(0.375 x 1000)^2=140,625.

So, for your 95mm cable, convert to 3.7402" and apply to formula: CM=(3.7402 x 1000)^2=13,989,096.

I'll leave it to you to figure for your 150mm cable and to combine the metric conversion factor with the 1000 if you'd like.

Search Wikipedia for "circular mils", then AWG. The formulae given will tell you all you need to know.

Know anyone over there looking for short term, contract electrical types?

Previous posts explain how to calculate the "Circular Mils" of a solid wire whose diameter "D" is measured in (or converted to) MILS, where a MIL is 1/1000 of an inch. The very simple answer is "D" squared. However if the conductor is a cable made up of "N" individual wires of diameter "d", then the answer is "N" times "d" squared.

You must only measure the diameters "D" and "d" of the actual conductors. The specified diameter of a complete cable sometimes is the outside diameter (O.D.) of the internal conductors and the surrounding insulation.
