Outdoor Light Design

06/19/2020 3:11 PM

Hi

When calculating required lumen for outdoor pole light, how to choose coefficient of utilisation? This seems complex. But is there any industry standard for estimating so? Pole height 8 meter. It is for pumping station courtyard lighting.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Follow the local codes for where this pole will be placed. (We don't know where this is.) The codes, when they exist, will likely identify only the minimum illumination levels. A rare location (dark skies region) might specify a maximum amount of light and/or automatic turn OFF conditions.

I would think the CU in this case is not particularly relevant as it deals more with work surface illumination, the proper lighting for workers doing a job of some sort...this would seem more like a security area or grounds lighting...so would probably fall in the 3 to 5 lumens per square foot of ground area ballpark...

The height of the pole is determined by the luminaire design, the area to cover and number of poles...Every light has a recommended mounting height for lumens per square foot desired...

While there is usually a standard for this sort of thing a bit of common sense is usually sufficient. One needs to look at the surrounding area, for it would be no good if it were shining all night into someone’s bedroom, would it?

Motion sensors might pick up a roaming cat, so a time switch in series with it would be a useful addition.
