1920 Refrigerator Changing Compressor

06/29/2020 5:39 PM

1 have a 1920 Frigidaire refrigerator I want to change the compressor out to the new type with Freon and get rid of the Sulphur Dioxide. Can I just hook the new unit up to the current lines running to the cooling unit. Will the cooling unit work with Freon?

...which makes this one a duplicate post.

Those posts talked about replacing the refrigerant, not the whole cooling system, compressor, condenser, maybe save evaporator?

Can't find much info....but you might check on Ebay to see how much it might be worth...If you had some pictures that would help...

It seems unlikely that the condenser & evaporator would be the right size, surface area, and evap expansion valve/orifice characteristic to level the load of your new compressor. If you took a modern system, like one you can install on a boat, with separate condenser & evap coil maybe, about the same cubic feet of cooled volume, and fit it to your shell, that could work. You could look for one without things like evap & condenser fans, convection heat transfer, to simplify the conversion. You may even be able to make it frost free behind the scenes. Who knows, you might be able to parlay the design into a niche market as shown in our other citations.
