actually this is a pretty good topic..

but I am going to tell you to google it with a different approach.

first ask yourself why are new materials developed.

If I asked this I would say for military or exploration needs.

such as titanium is a good start.

composites follow.

Here another good example, when the Brits were having trouble back in WWII, they had a magnetron that was machined. They were good enough to send their magnetron to this country, and we developed a new process to construct a magnetron by instead of machining the components we used precession stamping to turn out the units.

cheaper, quicker and more efficient.

I don't know if this will help, but a very interesting area that exhibits this concept is in the HSM (high speed machining ) area of manufacturing. This advanced machining concept has nearly revolutionized machining. It came about due to advances in multiple areas, and some of them are specifically related to material developments. some of the advancements that converge to allow this technology to succeed are: the developement of ceramic and air/oil cooled and lubricated bearings enabling machine tool spindles to operate in the 15k to 50k Rpm range. Advances in sub-micrograin carbides, cryogenically treated and coated with such materials as titanium-aluminum nitride, cubic boron nitride, or diamond pvd. Machine tool ways lined with Turcite for higher speed operation. Also very important are the advances in the software to control the CNC machines and the software to program them using such techniques as Trochoidal tool paths. I had worked in a shipyard where we had routers, we were cutting 7,000 for non ferrous materials other than stainless (capable of 20,000 rpm).

This was 17 years ago.

We did not use any cutting fluid because of the reaction it had to some of the more exotic metals. (exotic at the time not now-a-days) or any type of cooling (vortex tube or otherwise)

and we basically had the chipload carry away the heat generated.
