Layout of IPB (Insulated Phase Bus)

07/03/2020 8:38 AM

In our project, we are faced with the choice to either have the IPB cross through or over the firewall. Can someone please guide me as to which of the two layouts of IPB is better and what benefit does one have over the other? Can there be any concerns related to firefighting for any of these two options?

a. Above the Transformer Firewall

b. Through a hole in the Transformer Firewall

I presume that you are referring to factory made sections of insulated busbar similar to the ISOBAR MR™ product. If the wall is not yet built, go through, pack round the bars with fireproof material in sachets and clad both sides with an insulating fireproof material. If the wall already exists then go over rather than cutting a new hole.

With factory made bars the shorter and simpler the layout, the cheaper it is to construct and the lower chance of mistakes. One reservation, make sure that you can get the bars through the hole. If there are bends or obstructions planned close to the hole inserting a long solid bar can create severe problems for the erection crew. Been there, made that mistake myself, don't follow my example. To be fair there were no obstructions present or on the drawings when I measured up but they had appeared by the time we came to install.

Cutting a hole in an existing wall, which as it encloses a transformer is probably cast concrete, is messy, time consuming and may structurally compromise the integrity of the wall. You expose rebar when cutting a hole and it is not possible to seal it so that there will no subsequent corrosion.

Provided that any hole is correctly packed and clad there is no difference in respect of fire fighting.

The fire wall has 30 min rating. If you make a hole through it (for passing the IPBD), the fire rating may be compromised. I doubt codes will allow that. I have seen the IPBD taken over the fire wall.

Height of the firewall needs to be above the level of transformer conservator and thus there is no way height can be reduced.

If possible,do not penetrate the firewall,go over it,under it,or around it.

That is the best option overall from a liability perspective, not necessarily the cheapest at the time of installation.
