Well, according to Time anyways, the invention of the year is the iPhone.

Personally, I'm not qualified to make a judgement call on "invention of the year". There's a lot of stuff out there that I'm completely unaware of. What I will say is that Jobs has been savant like in his product development. While other CEOs keep telling us how their products are going to "revolutionize" some industry, Jobs actually does it.
Jobs seems to have a natural instinct for the aesthetic. Since he returned to Apple, their products have been visually beautiful and functionally efficient. In this age of drab and bloated products (I'm looking at you Vista) it really stands out, which is why Apple is eating everyones lunch (though HP seems to have caught on).
For those of you who feel I may be giving Jobs to much credit, I may be, but its awfully compelling that Apple seems to flourish when he's there and languish when he's not.
As for invention of the year? I doubt it. I'm sure there is some medical machine or engine, or generator, or something that is more worthy of that title. Still, the iPhone is impressive and certainly the cell phone of the year at least.
