What is a steam trap? What are the functions of a steam trap?

In steam lines some of the steam condenses into water, this can then cause what is known as water hammer, the sudden collapse of steam into condensate, to prevent this they fit a steam trap, a little float that lets the water out but traps the steam inside. This is mostly associated with heating steam line or auxiliaries.

When I in your age starting new with a job and undrgoing a trainning session on

What is a steam trap? What are the functions of a steam trap?

The instructor showed us the following Poseters:

1. A horse pulling a cart - Horse Trap.

2 . A Mouse caught in a trap - Mouse Trap

3 . A Bird in a cage - Bird Trap

4 . A naked woman - Man Trap

5 . A TD Trap - Steam Trap

So like the naked woman whos function is to trap man , a Steam Trap is an equipment whose job is to trap steam. Clear !

Steam is gas and will condense to water giving off its latent heat . That water (condensate) needs to be taken out else it will stay in the pipeline collecting to cool down incoming steam, occupying space inside pipe so the line starts getting filled/water logged and creating water hammering (pipe vibration). The steam trap then takes out the water/ condensate and as soon as condensate is drained out and the steam comes it shuts (traps).

Sajid, where are you located ? Pakistan/India let me know. If Pakistan which city - I'll teach you, If India/USA/Canada - I'll tell you where to go.

Here are a couple spots to visit in your adventure and educational endevours.

Here is a breakdown on the operations and fail modes of steam traps.

Here is an animated view of a mechanical trap.

good.

so steam trap is basically used to drain the condensed steam.

can you tell the locations on a steam pipeline, where the steam trap should be fitted ?

Why don't you stop trying to suck the brains out of CR 4, and hire yourself an engineer!

Del hasn't come in yet. He'll rip him apart.

See my reply on top. I offered him to teach him but he did not reply.

He knows his answers yet is acting dumb!!!!!and trying out our patience.

spirax-sarco has perhaps the best design guides for steam trap design. I always refer to their design guide book when designing new systems. If you have a local rep in your area call him up and see if he can bring you a copy of their hook-ups book.

If not, there is always the web:

He is from India and his local Rep. is Forbes Marshall who manufacturers:

1 . Spirax Sarco products.

2 . Bacharach (Fyrite) products.

3 . Coachran Boilers.

4 . Cambridge instruments.

5 . Electro Medical Instruments.

Is situated in Poona/India with Offices in all major cities in India.

He just wants us to do his leg work and not worth it.

Many steam traps are actually T&P steam traps for temperature and pressure. You'll definitely need them on any steam system that returns its condensate back to a condensate PUMP. It allows the condensed WATER to pass through but does NOT allow the steam to pass.

The T&P trap prevents the steam pressure from pushing back the return line and causing trouble for the condensate pump.

If you have a small steam system and the condensate return line rises up to a spill-over tee in the equalizer line, no condensate pump or T&P traps are required.
