Red Sea Ferry Sinks: Was it Top Heavy?

02/03/2006 1:35 PM

A couple of us here at work have been following the sinking of the Egyptian Ferry. A quick look at a photo of the ship, Al Salam Boccaccio, suggested to all of us that the design of the ship was poor and that it was likely top-heavy. Could this be why it sank?

Also, let me say that my prayers go out to all aboard and their families.

Not likely

The ship had performed as expected for over 30 years and the survivors said smoke was coming from the engines. If the ship was top heavy it would have been apparent much earlier in its service life. The ferry may appear top heavy in the picture, but its likely that cars and other cargo would have been in the hold providing more than enough ballast.

Sinking of egyptian ship

02/09/2006 1:33 AM

The ship must be designed to have a specific load, but as it gets aged the load it can withstand will be reduced. It has been said that the ship was carrying 1300 passengers. Is that ship is really capable of carrying that load? It has also been said that there was some smoke at the engine area. So the failure may not be due to the engineering failure, as it has already served for about 25 years.

To my mind all cruise ships look top-heavy.

And regardless of internal load and distribution why does a stricken ship turn upside down if it is not top-heavy.
