Hot Wired but No Spark?

08/27/2020 6:54 PM

A few weeks ago I about ran over a Tao Tao db-10 bike in the alley behind my garage.

It looked to be in great shape and with it being dark and nobody around I pushed it into the garage.

With no key I disconnected the 4 wire harness and shorted the red and black wires with an alligator clip.

After charging the battery I was able to turn it over but not start.

I removed the spark plug and there is plenty of compression, but no spark.

Given that this bike is in nearly perfect shape, I can't think of what might be wrong from here.

there are no accessory lights or anything else.

What function is the other two wires I wonder? green and blk/wht..

Any ideas will be tossed about.

Yup, looks like someone didn't need a bike, just an ignition coil...

..so I just put a meter on the the disconnected coil..

00.0Ω

I doubt that is the manufacturer spec.

What led you to this conclusion? before other components /connections?

just curious

I believe that, for some unknown reason, your OP was written over the OP on this thread:

Dunno what happened.

I had a 72 Celica ST. It was an awesome car. Then it developed electrical problems and began eating alternators and starters. It was insane. I finally left it with Toyota for two weeks and they gave it back with no idea what was causing it. I drove it down to Tampa. It wouldnt start. No spark. I hot wired it. It fired right up. When I got home without thinking I turned the key. The car shut off.

I traded it in the next week.

To this day have no idea what was going on with that cars electrical system.

After trimming away some length to keep the fuel lines from pinching I popped off the carburetor and then noticed the choke lever.

Dumped out extra fluid and blew some cleaner through ports without complte disassembly. ..put it back together ..actually used the choke and vroom.

1976 Mazda RX4 four door sedan. Two rotors, four barrel barb, automatic, power everything.

Manual Choke?

What a surprise that was.

There's a story there?

Unexpected none the less.

I don't have taotao running great just yet.

Apparently these things are notorious for loose wires etc. I've noticed a few.

Fortunately with no lights or automatic anything. it narrows things down.

I may still have to take the carb apart just so I know it's cleared out. I did have it running for the 30+ seconds operating the choke lever.. maybe it just needs to warm up a bit.

Haven't been back to it.

A time it is a good turn over it's followed by not wanting to at all.

Pew..

Pew..

Pew..

The story was my dad trying to get the car started the first morning he owned it. The choke knob was unlabled and hung on just a temporary bracket under the dash, I mean serious shade tree add on stuff. He had practically killed the battery by the time I got up and went out to see what was happening. I had never had a car with a manual choke so I had no clue what was going on. He finally called the dealership. They asked him what the choke position was. He asked them what a choke was. I fell to ground in a spasm of laughter. I knew what a choke was, but The idea of a manual choke on a brand new rotary engine powered sport sedan in 1976 was just so completely bizaro I would have never thought of it. We all just figured the knob was the hood release.

It was also the last Non Lincoln he ever bought.

Soo, you're just going to steal some kids bike?

or are you going to repair what you broke and then track down the owner.

you never said if someone was on it when you ran it over.?? You forgot to grab the key before you dumped him in Lake Michigan?

Maybe that's how Chicago rolls but we don't appreciate that kind of behavior here in Grafton, Ohio. (small town in middle America)

I didn't run over anything.

I almost ran it over where it was dumped next to my garbage cans on my own property.

If I did run it over would I tracked down the kid and charge him for damage to my truck?

I haven't mentioned this before but neighbors do bring me their old bikes and a lot more.

People get rid of things easy in Chicago..

If anyone claims it should I get it street worthy I would give it back happily.

As it was it was nice junk.

I've had much better.

I removed the cover from the starter chain and a mystery shim of metal and a bolt popped out.

The one hole it might have fit lost its threads.

It looks like the shim glided over and guided the center of the chain.

...may have.
